Nike and the Jordan label are all set to celebrate the upcoming Latin Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15, 2024) with a themed release of Nike Air Jordan 5 "El Grito" sneakers. After releasing a full-fledged Somos Familia collection last year, the label gives the beloved Air Jordan 5 model a themed look to celebrate Mexican culture.
The shoe celebrates Mexican culture and represents the pride and shared identity of Mexicans around the world. The release also means Nike and Jordan Brand are taking a step further to showcase their appreciation for Latin American communities.
The Nike and Jordan label is all set to release the Nike Air Jordan 5 "El Grito" on the official e-commerce site of Nike SNKRS on September 12, 2024, for a retail price of $210 in adult sizes.
Nike and Jordan brand celebrate the Mexican Independence Day with Nike Air Jordan 5 "El Grito" sneakers
Nike and Jordan Brand have continued taking steps toward the Mexican communities, and it became evident when the labels united to create the largest retail space, 'Nike & Jordan World of Flight,' in the heart of Mexico City. The retail store also became the largest retail store in Latin America on July 11, 2024.
Furthering its steps, the label showcases its commitment by launching the Nike Air Jordan 5 "El Grito" in Sail and Dark Pony colorway. The official site introduces the shoes as,
"This special AJ5 pays tribute to Mexico’s heritage and culture, including streets, colors and textures. It represents a symbol of identity, progress and pride—not only in Mexico but worldwide."
The Nike Air Jordan 5 "El Grito" shoe campaign was led by popular Mexican musician El Malilla. The musician El Malila commented on the shoes, saying,
"The Jumpman is from the hood and today we have one from Mexico, to Mexico. Proudly Jordan, proudly from the hood, proudly Mexican."
The shoe's upper comes from white leather material with embossed textures on the toe box, tongues, and heels. This special embossing is inspired by Talavera, a Mexican craft on pottery. The official site states,
"Laser-cut leather adds an elevated finish, while craft details like embossed leather are inspired by local ornamental architecture. Asymmetrical midsole flames combine with off-white leather and red and green lace locks for a look reminiscent of the Mexican flag. A special "VIVA" dubrae pulls everything together."
The shoe features red and green hues on lace locks and midsole teeth, contrasting with white, representing the Mexican flag. The insides of the tongue feature green, red, and white hues to the Jordan label, giving a special nod to the Mexican flag and its Independence Day.
The shoe was cleverly named "El Grito," which refers to Dolores's cry/scream. Commonly known as El Grito de Independencia (translating to 'the Cry for Independence'), the day represents the unity of the Mexican people, who gathered to take control of their own country and rebelled against the Spanish monarchy on September 16.
The day changed Mexico forever, and hence, the shoe's name carries a deeper meaning. The Nike Air Jordan 5 "El Grito" is slated to be released on the official e-commerce site of Nike SNKRS and select retailers globally on September 12, 2024, at a retail price of $210. The shoe was also limited-released in Mexico at Jordan World of Flight.
