Nickel Boys is a 1960s-set story of the life of a bright African-American teenager. His name is Elwood Curtis. Elwood was raised by his grandmother. His ideals on justice and nonviolence were drawn from the lessons he had learned from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

But Elwood's life changed overnight as he got transferred to Nickel Academy, the Florida-based reform school. But Nickel is no reforming place; it is a place of brutality, abuse, and corruption.

He encounters Turner, an anarchist, rebellious student who has little regard for the system. Unlike Elwood, Turner has a trust issue in fighting back. These contrasting perspectives on life provide much drama. Elwood is quite optimistic. On the other hand, Turner is more realistic. It's that kind of friendship that underlies most of the narrative.

The staff at school subjected Elwood to continuous physical and emotional harassment. Despite the hard treatment, he holds on to his morals. However, as the system of racism in the school is exposed, Elwood has to face the brutality of oppression.

His story is both full of hope and full of heartbreak. He soon learns that survival requires painful choices sometimes. As per Nickel Boys novel, the leaders of Nickel Academy are corrupt. They are authoritarian. The boys are forced to work, get corporal punishment, and suffer emotional pain.

However, in the midst of all this, Elwood and Turner find comfort in their friendship. Their friendship gives them the strength to survive the horrors that they face every day. It is a central theme of the show, pointing out the importance of human connection in dire situations.
