The Internet has been receiving mixed reactions from people since John Turturro declined to reprise his character – Carmine Falcone, Gotham City’s crime boss in the HBO series The Penguin.

He plays a grim role in the film. In one of the scenes, he brutally strangles Catwoman’s friend. It is also revealed that he even kills Selina Kyle’s (Zoe Kravitz) mother in the film.

"Bro played a guy who literally chokes women to death already & went, "I'm better than this" you literally choked Catwoman like what," an online user mentioned.

An X user reminded him of his evil character from his previous film,

Another user also joked on the similar lines about Antonny star.

"What if Antonny starr declined homelander because of the same reason 🤣🤣 dumb," a person opined.

A user also tweeted about not researching before accepting to play the character of Carmine.

"i respect his morals but did he not research who carmine was before The Batman," another X user tweeted.

One user countered him by saying it’s just acting and he is not wrong.

"Morals? It's acting, he's not doing anything wrong. LMAO."

Others said that he chose to back out this time as he might have realised his role was sinister and he had a limit.

One user reminded people that he is doing it for the movies and not to be personal with his real life character.

"Dude it’s a movie," the user posted on X.

Appreciating the bold move by John Turturro, a user tweeted that it is refreshing to see an actor using a platform to draw the attention of people towards violence against women.

She continues with what else one can expect from Gotham City which only represents ghastly characters in a fictional city. It’s rather a time to talk about real violence against women by real nasty men.

Why did John Turturro decline the role in 'The Penguin'?

In an interview with Variety, Turturro revealed that the reason goes beyond “scheduling conflicts” with the showrunner, Lauren LeFranc.

He said, “I did what I wanted with the role. In the show, there was a lot of violence towards women, and that’s not my thing.”

Sharing her views on Turturro’s views, LeFranc said that she was under the impression that it was due to his dates Turturro cannot play the part offered to him in the series.

“I completely respect an actor who doesn’t want to take on a role for whatever their personal reasons,” LeFranc said.
“I only want people to join our show who are excited and want to further the story we’re trying to tell. I think Mark Strong did a really fantastic job. He made the character his own and also really honored what John Turturro did.”
