David Corenswet is swooping in to replace Henry Cavill in the new James Gunn's Superman movie, and fans are confused, to put it one way. The superhero reboot offered fans a first look with a trailer that dropped on Thursday, and in it, Corenswet can be seen as the titular character, while Rachel Brosnahan plays his love interest, Lois Lane.
The trailer has since sparked a wave of varied reactions, and while some users have brushed Corenswet off as a "downgrade," others claim he might be just as good, if not better. Here's what one user noted, for example, when someone said the forthcoming movie is going to be the biggest "downgrade in superhero cinema":
"No. They both look great. You don't have to hate one to like the other."
Others chimed in as well:
"I’m sorry you’re stuck worshipping a bad movie from over a decade ago, but Man of Steel sucked," one user claimed.
"Looking at them side by side, it’s literally impossible to name a bigger downgrade. We might be cooked, cuh," someone else opined.
"Give him a chance! Gunn usually does OK. I'm slightly optimistic. Let's be honest in 2024, this could have gone WAY worse," another echoed.
"No offense but seriously? Give the new actor a chance! I know that most everyone thinks Henry Cavill is the best, but things change. Christopher Reeves will always be Superman to me, but broaden your freaking horizons! You might suprise yourself!" someone else suggested.
The comments didn't end there, and while some dissed the new actor, others fought to give him a fair chance:
"For superman The chiseled jaw line is the only criteria i guess," one user stated.
"hating on this movie when it actually looks like it might be fun is crazy to me. i understand hate on the flash movie but this sh** just dropped a trailer… give it some time," someone opined.
"Yesterday I found the trailer, Look at the thumbnail I immediately ignored it, Superman mean to be strong big and powerful, he is not batman and his face have to show Hope, love and more this new version look stupidly awful, but still hope its story will ne good," a third person claimed.
"Bro Henry Cavill is too handsome and well-carved that it's hard to have it's replacement (I'm saying as a straight who only likes girl)," a naysayer chimed in.
Notably, scores online also weighed in with their own opinion of downgrades, such as Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn to that of Lady Gaga's, as well as Christian Bale's Batman to that of Ben Affleck's, among others.
What we know about the upcoming Superman movie:
In the upcoming James Gunn Superman film, Nicholas Hoult will assume the role of Lex Luthor, the movie's villain, taking over for Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, and Jesse Eisenberg.
As for the trailer, it opens up with Superman, bloodied and disheveled, crashing into the snow. He whistles for his dog, Krypto, who swoops in to rescue him in a red cape.
The scene then cuts to an unrecognizable Clark Kent rushing through the streets as he makes his way to work at the Daily Planet, his build visibly larger than those around him.
