After the immense success of 2021's Mortal Kombat, the franchise is returning with a sequel as the action fantasy film's lore will be continued in another project by Ed Boon, who wrote the original piece.
As speculations have surrounded the nature of the succeeding film, Boon has been letting fans in on more details about Mortal Kombat 2, and if the characters of Mortal Kombat who died in the first will make a return.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Boon revealed that a few dead characters will certainly have a comeback in Mortal Kombat 2 as he said:
"I can say Josh Lawson doesn't play Kano's twin. We've killed a number of characters who are in Mortal Kombat 1 and our latest games. So we deal with spirits and the NetherRealm and things like that. There are ways to bring dead characters back."
Mortal Kombat 2 is also set to star Mehcad Brooks as Jackson "Jax" Briggs, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion. Apart from that, Adeline Rudolph is joining the film as Kitana and Martyn Ford will be playing Outworld overlord Shao Kahn.
Mortal Kombat 2 will be led by Karl Urban's Johnny Cage and the creator added more details on Urban's character and how he becomes a lens for the viewers in the film. Here's everything he revealed about Johnny Cage.
Ed Boon opened up on Johnny Cage's role in Mortal Kombat 2
According to Ed Boon, Urban's role in Mortal Kombat 2 has an essence of a Hollywood guy who finds himself in this action-packed scene. Describing the role as being a little different than the original game, Boon added,
"You finally get to see Johnny Cage. His integration into the Mortal Kombat story and universe is a big part of what this movie explores. He's a washed-up Hollywood guy thrown into this magical, ultra-violent thing. Karl, his depiction of Johnny Cage is different than our games in some ways. He's adding his own flair to it, but I think it'll feel fresh. There's like a novelty factor in there."
Director Simon McQuoid added his own words on the character, saying,
"We wanted a character that wasn't just completely silly, comic-book...It's a character that could instantly go there and become too light and throwaway if we were to lean too much into the kind of cheese. The casting of Karl Urban for that role allowed that character to have more depth."
Mortal Kombat 2 is written by Jeremy Slater while Todd Garner, James Wan, Toby Emmerich, E. Bennett Walsh and Simon McQuoid are set to produce it. Distributed by Warner Bros, the film is set to be released on October 24, 2025.
