Will Jim Carrey return for Sonic 4, revealing the actor's answer about his possible future return

Jim Carrey has been an integral part of the Sonic the Hedgehog live-action film franchise since its inception in 2020. The veteran actor plays the antagonistic mad scientist Dr. Ivo Robotnik, who goes against the blue hedgehog.

The 62-year-old actor has appeared in all three films released so far. Meanwhile, he announced retirement from acting after the second film in 2022 but returned in 2024’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3, playing the dual role of Ivo Robotnik and his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik.

At the end of the film, Ivo seemingly dies as he sacrifices himself to save the world. This left Jim Carrey's future in the franchise uncertain. However, the actor has shared a positive update about his appearance in Sonic 4, saying he is open to the idea of returning to the franchise.

Jim Carrey is open to returning for Sonic the Hedgehog 4

Jim Carrey talked about his potential appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 in an interview with Cinema Today. He revealed he is willing to star in the film if the team comes up with an interesting story idea. He said:

“I’m definitely open [to Sonic 4]. I’m open to the idea. Generally, they come to me with the next idea and if I go, ‘Oh, that sounds fun’, then I’ll do it. I don’t feel locked to anything in life unless it’s something that interests me.”

Carrey highlighted he loves working with the team of Sonic and likes the fans’ response to the films; hence, he would not mind returning to the franchise. He stated,

“I certainly love this crew, I love this gang that makes these movies, and I love the fans. I think there’s a lot of really great energy around it and great responses. And the fans jump in and go like, ‘How about it if you do this?’ and they’ve been super helpful. I think we’re all making this movie together.”

The director of the film series, Jeff Fowler, has also expressed his interest in working with Carrey again. However, the filmmaker noted that nothing has been finalized yet, and the actor’s casting in the film has not been officially announced.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is currently in development. The reports of the film being greenlit came around the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in December 2024. The fourth installment is expected to hit the theaters in the spring of 2027.

Jim Carrey plays Dr. Ivo Robotnik, a crazy scientist who becomes obsessed with capturing Sonic in the film series. In the first movie, Robotnik is hired by the government to hunt Sonic after a power outage. He uses one of Sonic’s quills to power his machines but is defeated and sent to a mushroom planet.

In the 2022 sequel, Robotnik escapes the mushroom planet and teams up with Knuckles to find the Master Emerald. He betrays Knuckles, takes the Emerald’s power, and builds a giant robot, but Sonic and his friends stop him.

In the threequel, Robotnik works with Sonic to stop Shadow but later turns against him after reuniting with his grandfather, Gerald, also played by Carrey. In the end, Robotnik sacrifices himself to save the planet and showcases his heroic side.
