James Gunn's entry into the DC universe will start a new era for the production house, starting fresh with Superman. The studios introduced the new logo for Peter Safran and Gunn's DC, but as fans have noticed, it appeared selectively in only a handful of films. As more projects line up for Gunn in the studios, the director is also clarifying why the animation has made its way only to some projects.
Going on Threads, the Guardians Of The Galaxy creator wrote:
"All DC television & film projects are now under DC Studios. Because Harley Quinn was developed long before us we didn’t think it was fair to put the DC Studio fanfare on there. On Penguin, which we had a small hand in developing, we have a different DC Studios anim at the end. We’re currently working on the DC Studios Elseworlds opening."
The DCU's new logo was a topic of discussion among many, and Jim Lee, president of DC Comics, shared his view on the major change. He wrote:
"My peak years as a fan and reader of comics was the mid 1980s and DC was going through a powerful transformation—a renaissance powered by such visionary, legendary works such as the Watchmen, Dark Knight Returns, and even The Shadow by Howard Chaykin was a stand out. It was a period of time that would forever change the industry as we all looked at the medium and its potential in new and innovative ways."
He further noted about the new logo and the symbol of Superman breaking free of the chains around him as he said:
"The beautiful motion logo with the iconic, classic take on Superman breaking forth from the chains that bind him is a powerful reminder of DC Comics’ role in the history of comic books and the impact of our iconic stories on modern, global pop culture."
What does James Gunn's entry to the DCU mean for the studio?
James Gunn's DCU will explore various projects- old and fresh and is starting with the highly anticipated David Corenswet's Superman. Gunn himself has teased various plans for the upcoming projects which sound both exciting and promising. Speaking to Variety in December, Gunn said:
"One of the main things I want to establish is that you can do anything at DC Studios. We can make complete family fare. We can make something that’s for general audiences, like ‘Superman.’ We can make something that’s violent and s*xual, like this — which I didn’t think was that violent and s*xual; ‘Peacemaker’ is both more violent and more s*xual — but I want every project to have its own voice. It isn’t about creating a world in which everything is all s*x and violence. It’s about creating a world in which we can tell the story about, you know, one type of character in different genres.”
James Gunn's Superman is set to hit theatres on July 11, 2025.
