With 'Captain America: Brave New World' coming soon, the question remains—Will Chris Evans return? For Marvel fans, the idea of Captain America without Chris Evans feels impossible to accept. How can one move forward when the moral compass of the Marvel universe decides to hang up the shield and go live his days of glory?

Spoiler: the Captain America shield is in good hands, but hope never dies—especially in a multiverse. And if the question is about 'Captain America: Brave New World', the answer seems to be "maybe." Evans said he might return to Marvel later, but not in the 2025 film, that is, he's open to the possibility but he said that doesn't see the right moment yet. However, this could be a decoy. The doubt persists though—and in the MCU, that's already enough reason for fans to keep their radars on.

Evans and the weight of the shield—a farewell or a see you later?

"It's tough, because look, I love that role deeply. He means so much to me, and I really do. I think there's more Steve Rogers stories tell, sure. But at the same time, I'm very, very precious with it… it's like this little shiny thing that I have that I love so much, and I just don't want to mess up in any way." — Evans revealed at his C2E2 appearance.

It's as if Steve Rogers for Evans is what the shield is for Captain America—something too valuable to be used carelessly. And who can blame him? Endgame was a cultural event, a perfectly choreographed goodbye. Tampering with that now would be like trying to take a second bite of an already perfect apple.

'Captain America: Brave New World' is the official passing of the mantle to Anthony Mackie, who, as Sam Wilson, has already won fans' hearts. Chris Evans knows this better than anyone. In his own words:

"As much as I'm connected to that role and love telling those stories and working with those people, it doesn't quite feel right right now."

And he's right. Let the shield speak, and let Sam write his own story.

A life beyond the shield — What Chris Evans revealed to GQ

Evans isn't just introspective about his MCU role; he has been rethinking his life. In an interview with GQ in September 2023, the actor revealed that he had been spending more time in Massachusetts, away from the Los Angeles hustle. He described this period as a return to his roots and a more authentic version of himself:

"I haven't worked all year and I don't plan to, which has been lovely."

For Evans, this wasn't just a break—it was a conscious decision. He wanted to live more and contemplate simple things, such as the fact that trees are green or that his dog, Dodger, has no idea of his fame. According to him:

"The fact that any of us are here is unbelievable. And that kind of just brings me a sense of deep peace. And I don't have any more thoughts or questions about my own career."

This career pause reflects an almost poetic connection with Steve Rogers. Both are men trying to find a balance between the responsibility of carrying a legacy and the desire to live fully. And just as Steve handed over the shield, Evans seemed to have decided to spend more time away from the spotlight.

The multiverse—the eternal return (literally)

In the MCU, "end" is just a word the writers use to keep the audience with a knot in their throats. The multiverse has already brought variants of heroes and villains, and rumors suggest that 'Avengers: Secret Wars' could be the perfect scenario for a possible return of Evans. Imagine a Steve Rogers from another timeline or even a final sacrifice that echoes Captain America's legacy.

Evans has joked about this before. His appearance as Johnny Storm in 'Deadpool & Wolverine' proved that he doesn't shy away from revisiting old roles. And who knows? Maybe the multiverse will give us a version of Steve we haven't met yet, without compromising Sam Wilson's evolution as the new face of courage.

So, will Chris Evans return in Captain America: Brave New World?

The short answer - probably not in 'Captain America- Brave New World'. But we know Marvel is a master at keeping cards up its sleeve (or in the shield).

"I'll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience. But I'm also very precious with it. It's something that I am very proud of." — said Evans to GQ.

For now, the shield is where it should be—in Sam's hands. And what hands! With Anthony Mackie taking on the role in great style, the future of Captain America is guaranteed. But in a universe where everything is possible, the question isn't if Chris Evans returns, but when and how.
