Wicked reportedly removed from theatre listings in Kuwait

According to a December 6, 2024 post by Variety, Wicked starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo is now airing in Kuwait. This comes days after it was released from the official theater listings across Kuwait on the eve of its theoretical release.

As reported by the Daily Mail on December 4, 2024, Minister Mohammad Mortada stated that the film promoted "homose*uality and se*ual transformation" contradicting values of "faith and morality" by "diminishing" the significance of the family unit.

Which Wicked stars are a part of the LGBTQ+ community

The initial decision by Kuwait to remove the Wicked movie from theater listings prompted fans to question which stars of the movie have openly come out. This is because the reason behind the removal is reported to be the movie's alleged connection with the LGBTQ+ community, including casting LGBTQ+ stars and also having an LGBTQ+ character.

Cynthia Erivo came out in May 2022 in an interview with British Vogue and is speculated to be dating actress and producer Lena Waithe. While speaking to Vogue at the time, the actress mentioned,

"For me, it means taking a risk to claim the freedom of being one's full self. I could feel myself actively hiding that part of myself and it didn't feel good. That takes a lot of energy to uphold and there is zero return. I felt I was looking at my community from inside a glass box. I don't want to watch from inside that box any more...there's not enough room and no ventilation!"

Jonathan Stuart Bailey who plays Fiyero came out as gay to his friends and family in his early 20s. While speaking to People Magazine in March 2022, Jonathan opened up about coming out and said,

"I reached a point where I thought, 'F--- this.' I'd much prefer to hold my boyfriend's hand in public or be able to put my own face picture on Tinder and not be so concerned about that than getting a part."

Brownyn James who plays the role of Shenshen is also gay. James is married to Katherine-Alice, the founder of a non-profit organization that promotes accessibility in the arts in Yorkshire. Bowen Yang and James answered questions from Gay Times recently. When asked which character from the film would stay at the 'Gay Club; all night, both responded, saying, "ShenShen."
