Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande's Wicked is constantly sprinkling its magic in theaters, and now it's time it does that in individual homes. It will be released digitally on December 31, 2024, but it will contain lots of new content for the audience to enjoy, according to Universal.
For the United Kingdom fans, it will be available digitally on January 3, 2024. Moreover, the 4K Blu-ray version won't be available until next year. It has proven itself to be one of the best films this year and has collected $580 million globally at the time of writing.
There will be tons of extra Wicked content in there
Wicked's digital release will include bonus features and there are a lot of them. From deleted scenes to a deep dive into The Wizard of Oz, it will be the culmination of how the film came to fruition, which is likely to add around three hours of additional content.
The film is about Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo), who later becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, and Galinda Upland (Ariana Grande). Both of them initially clash with each other but end up being friends in the movie.
Elphaba's story behind becoming a witch will leave the fans stunned as a dark secret lies in the Emerald City. Jeff Goldblum plays the Wizard of Oz and the character gives a feel of another of the roles he played in Thor: Ragnarok, Grandmaster.
A sequel to the film is already planned, which will come out in November next year and there might be more. It is likely they will serve as sequels to Wicked, as Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman indicated in one interview. The former said,
We are actually talking about something and it's under wraps.
Following its release, it was praised critically, with the American Film Institute calling it one of the best films of the year. Alongside this, it is also the highest-grossing Oz film to have been developed to date and the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2024.
It is based on the novel written by an American writer, Gregory MaguireWicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. There are multiple themes to the story but it mainly deals with how a society can label black sheep as evil. Other themes include propaganda, terrorism, and life purpose.
