Singer Zach Bryan's 2023 criminal case officially concluded on November 14, People Magazine reported, as he completed his deferred prosecution agreement. The singer was arrested last September for obstruction of investigation, forcing him to enter a six-month deferred prosecution agreement on May 14.
According to the magazine, Oklahoma District Attorney's Office spokesperson Michelle Lowry stated:
"Mr. Bryan’s successful completion of the deferred prosecution agreement (DPA) is the conclusion of this criminal case. He admitted responsibility and followed all of the rules and conditions of probation."
The singer-songwriter was cuffed and briefly sent to jail last year in Oklahoma. According to the New York Times, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol charged him with obstructing an officer and a misdemeanor.
Zach Bryan challenges the cops, says he's ready to go to jail
As reported by multiple outlets, flanked by his bodyguards' cars, Zach Bryan was going to watch a Philadelphia Eagles game in New England. However, an officer pulled over one of the cars, prompting Bryan to pull over himself.
He then probed why things were taking so much time, and when the officer urged him to step back into his vehicle, he challenged the cop:
"I’ll go to jail, let’s do it."
According to People Magazine, Bryan also referred to the situation as why "people do not like police officers." He then told the officer that the cops were "out of control," and that it would "be a mistake" if he wasn't let go immediately. He also called them "middle-aged white dudes arresting people."
As mentioned in an affidavit obtained by the outlet, Zach Bryan was "clearly aggravated and argumentative." His bodyguard was stopped at 5:40 p.m. local time for doing 78 mph in a 55 mph zone.
Another was pulled over for doing 60 mph in a 35 mph zone. The musician was booked in Craig County jail but was eventually let go on a $1,000 bond.
According to The New York Times, in now-deleted posts, Zach Bryan took to X to confirm the arrest:
"Today I had an incident with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Emotions got the best of me and I was out of line in the things I said. I support law enforcement as much as anyone can, I was just frustrated in the moment, it was unlike me and I apologize. They brought me to jail, and there is a mug shot of me floating around. Prayers we can all move on from this and prayers people know l'm just trying the best I can, I love you guys and I am truly sorry to the officers.”
He then took to his Instagram stories to narrate his version of the stories-- one that largely matched what was mentioned in the police report, according to the outlet. Per People Magazine, he said:
"I want to start by saying — I have to deal with the legalities of it. I did go to jail. They didn't play favorites, and I was an idiot today. My decisions did not reflect who I was as a person, and I just want to make that clear. I should have been smarter about it."
According to NME, Zach Bryan went on:
"He brings me over to his car, and I just didn’t help my situation at all. I felt like a child. It was ridiculous, it was immature, and I just pray everyone knows I don’t think I’m above the law. I was just being disrespectful, and I shouldn’t have been. It was my mistake.”
Per the outlet, Michelle Lowry, director of communications for the Craig County District Attorney said in a statement:
"He admitted responsibility and followed all of the rules and conditions of probation. DPA’s are commonly used in cases where the person has no criminal record. It is an opportunity to take responsibility for their actions, follow probation rules, and avoid having a criminal conviction on their records.”
In other news, Zach Bryan made headlines last month when he announced that a second show at London's BST Hyde Park 2025 was forthcoming, citing "phenomenal demand." For his first shows in the UK leg, he will be going on-stage at the Great Oak Stage on June 28 and 29.
