Trey Songz has been granted the $11 Million default judgment amid allegations that he attacked a Maryland Capitol cop. However, the singer is pleading with the judge to scale back the ruling, noting that the judgment is catastrophic.
As per Trey's lawyer “The enforcement of this default judgment will be devastating to [Trey] and will ruin his life," the lawsuit reads.
Per the outlet, the ruling came this past November in Maryland Capitol police officer Tyrelle Dunn's case against Songz, as he accused the latter of injuring him while he was trying to usher his wife out of the R&B artist's Las Vegas hotel room and into safety.
The incident allegedly took place in November 2021 at The Cosmopolitan Hotel. The singer has categorically denied the allegations, noting that he was unaware of the lawsuit until the judgment was made public.
All we know about the lawsuit against Trey Songz as his lawyer claims he wasn't even aware he was being served
Per Brigada News, Trey Songz and his security team kidnapped Tyrelle's wife and allegedly assaulted her in their hotel room. He claims her phone was confiscated, and she was prohibited from leaving. Then, as soon as he entered the room to save his wife, an altercation between Trey Songz, Tyrelle, and the security team broke out.
“[Tyrelle’s] wife was escorted by Defendant security personnel to room 6014 where she was told she would meet Trey Songz,” the lawsuit read. That while in room 6014, plaintiff’s wife was assaulted, tried to leave and had her phone taken away.”
Reportedly, Tyrelle sustained several injuries that day, including a fractured eye socket. He consequently approached the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to report the incident, which then gave way to the investigation. However, despite months of inquiries, Trey Songz had not been charged with anything.
In court, Tyrelle reportedly claimed to have known nothing about the lawsuit until he learned about the default judgment in the media.
"Good cause exists to set aside the default judgment because [Tyrelle] did not properly effectuate service of process of the summons and complaint on [Trey] pursuant to Nevada or California law. [Trey] did not know about this lawsuit until a few days ago, on November 27, 2024, upon which he promptly engaged counsel and filed this Motion,” Trey’s lawyer wrote, per In Touch.
It goes on:
“[Trey] did not know about this lawsuit until November 27, 2024, when he received Instagram messages from fans extending their support after news broke about Dunn’s default judgment. [Trey] promptly engaged civil defense counsel over the Thanksgiving holiday and filed this Motion to set aside the default judgment the next week. [Trey] deserves to have his day in court to defend himself, rather than being subjected to a massive default judgment which was improperly obtained in an underlying case that [Trey] knew nothing about until a week prior to filing this Motion. The enforcement of this default judgment will be devastating to [Trey] and will ruin his life.”
The singer's lawyer claims that on the night of the alleged incident, soon after Tyrelle reported the incident, cops flocked to the hotel to look for signs of any abuse,
"They separated witnesses and took their statements, confiscated mobile phones, and obtained a search warrant of [Trey’s] DNA and other evidence."
Despite executing a thorough search over the next few months, they were unable to file any charges, the lawsuit states. Trey Songz's lawyer also emphasized the impact the judgment would have on the singer's life, noting that the singer wasn't even properly served with the lawsuit. At the time of writing, a judge has yet to declare a verdict.
