The American Gigolo star Richard Gere, who was once one of the biggest heartthrobs in Hollywood, no longer lives in the United States of America. The veteran actor, along with his wife Alejandra Silva and his kids, moved to Madrid, Spain, in November 2024.

This is not the first time an American celebrity has moved to another country. However, netizens are quite curious about why Richard Gere moved to Spain.

According to Daily Mail, Gere's wife, Alejandra Silva, at the time of leaving the U.S., made it clear that their relocation had nothing to do with Donald Trump winning the presidential election. The reason, she clarified, was that Gere has always been vocal about his political views, and he has always been critical of Trump. As per Daily Mail, Silva said it was it was a "privilege" to have the freedom to "escape and go somewhere".

Richard Gere, on February 8, 2025, while accepting the International Goya Award in Granada, Spain, said:

"We're in a very dark place in America, where we have a bully, a thug, who's the president of the United States. But it's not just in the U.S., it's everywhere."

The primary reason for Richard Gere to move to Madrid, Spain, along with his Wife, Alejandra, and their two sons — Alexander (5), and James (4) — was that he wanted to be closer to his wife and her big family. Gere also wanted his kids to be in a bilingual environment. The Primal Fear actor expressed his desire to embrace and experience a different culture and lifestyle. However, for him, it was mainly about spending time with his wife and her family in her native country.

Previously, Richard Gere on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, regarding their relocation, said:

"My wife is Spanish and she gave me about seven years here, so we’re going to spend some years in Madrid."

However, months after moving to Madrid, Gere's wife, Silva, has revealed that she misses America. When she was asked by the Daily Mail whether they have plans to stay in Spain forever, the Spanish publicist and activist said:

"For a few years and then come back [to the US]. But we're always coming back. We'll come back here in the summer because we have the kids at camp. We just have to balance our lives there and here. I'm with my family... You know, I missed them a lot. But I miss the US. So we come back and forth."
