In light of the recent departures from As I Lay Dying, frontman and vocalist Tim Lambesis released a statement via Instagram on November 4, 2024. His statement comes after guitarist Phil Sgrosso exited the band on October 30, 2024, after releasing a statement on Instagram.
Sgrosso expressed that, given recent developments, including band member departures and the cancellation of their European tour before the new album, the band faced a challenging and serious situation. He wrote,
“After witnessing some concerning patterns of behavior, I’ve realized that I can no longer, in good conscience, enable further actions that could negatively affect anyone working within this space. For these reasons, I feel it’s in my best interest to completely distance myself, both creatively and personally, from As I Lay Dying.”
Tim Lambesis, in his statement, shared that he needed time to reflect on recent events involving the band. He acknowledged that the environment had become unhealthy, making it unrealistic to continue touring with the previous lineup.
He admitted that even managing small details had become challenging and recognized his tendency to hold firmly to his vision for the band, even when others felt it should take a different direction. Lambesis wrote,
“It saddens me to think about the behaviors, communication, and patterns of interaction that led up to the tour cancellation. Phil and I no longer saw eye to personally, creatively, or financially. Discussions during this time prompted his decision to depart first, with each of the touring members deciding to leave shortly after, as they were not interested in going on without him.”
Tim Lambesis said As I Lay Dying’s Through Storms Ahead will be released on November 15, 2024
In his statement, Tim Lambesis expressed full support for each member’s decision to depart, believing it was the best choice for everyone involved. He added that he would always be open to direct conversations, as he felt that a lack of communication had led to assumptions and additional issues.
Tim Lambesis shared his thoughts on the future, noting that As I Lay Dying was built on persistence and determination. Reflecting on the early years from 2000 to 2004, he recalled that over twenty people had contributed to bringing his vision to life, a vision he had held since he was 19, and expressed deep gratitude for their efforts.
Looking ahead, he expressed excitement about building a new team and creating an environment that would be supportive, positive, and creatively inspiring. Tim Lambesis added,
““Through Storms Ahead” will still be released November 15. I am proud of what we created and look forward to sharing it with all of you.”
The first to leave As I Lay Dying was bassist Ryan Neff, who departed with minimal explanation. Shortly after, the band's tour manager also quit amid rumors of the cancellation of As I Lay Dying's European tour. Guitarist Ken Susi then announced his departure, citing that his morals had been tested beyond his limits.
This was quickly followed by drummer Nick Pierce's exit, who shared that he needed to step away from the band to protect his health and integrity.
