Millie Bobby Brown, star of Netflix’s Stranger Things, missed the Broadway opening of the show’s theatrical prequel, Stranger Things: The First Shadow. The play had its opening night on April 22 at the Marquis Theatre in New York City. Among the star attendees of the event were Stranger Things actors such as Noah Schnapp, Charlie Heaton, Natalia Dyer, Jamie Campbell Bower, Priah Ferguson, Cara Buono, Brett Gelman, and Matthew Modine.

Millie Bobby Brown missed the Broadway opening as the actress is busy shooting for Enola Holmes 3, according to People Magazine. Brown, who has played Eleven on the show since its first season, which began streaming in 2016, is a part of the series’ ensemble cast. Stranger Things chronicles the adventures of a group of kids in Indiana in the 1980s and incorporates elements of horror, the supernatural, and science fiction.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Stranger Things: The First Shadow initially opened up in London in December 2023 and was written by series writer Kate Trefry. As a prequel, the play is also connected to the series’ upcoming fifth season on Netflix. The news outlet notes that Trefry said,

“It’s totally canon. It’s totally tied into the series with seasons one through four, but also reaching into the future with season five. It had to be this missing puzzle piece that connects all of these different things”

Continuing, Trefry also revealed

“I was working on writing season five and the play at the same time, so they’re really kind of two sides of a coin, and I’m really excited for people to be able to take in the full story and see how the these two things across different mediums are in kind of a dialog with each other”

The play involves the makers of the series as well, with series creators the Duffer brothers coming onto the project as executive producers, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Brown had previously appeared as Sherlock Holmes’ sister in the first and second installments of the film series, which also stars Henry Cavill and Helena Bonham Carter.

On April 22, Netflix noted that the third installment of Enola Holmes is in production in the UK. While the streaming platform hasn’t shared a release date for the film yet, it did share that Enola Holmes 3 will involve the character’s adventures on the island of Malta.

The same day, Millie Bobby Brown posted a promotional clip to her Instagram page, which involved a fictional skit featuring her and Louis Partridge, who plays Tewkesbury in the film series. In the caption, Brown gave a shoutout to the director, Philip Barantini, and wrote,

“We’re in production but not without @barantini at the helm. And so we begin.”

Meanwhile, fans can catch the behind-the-scenes of the Stranger Things play by watching the documentary Behind the Curtain: Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which follows the theatrical production team as they bring the play to life. The documentary is currently streaming on Netflix.
