Lil Durk, whose real name is Durk Banks, has been arrested in Broward County, Florida, for a murder-for-hire plot.
His arrest came shortly after five alleged members of his OTF group were accused of being involved in a scheme targeting rapper Quando Rondo, which led to the shooting and death of Rondo’s cousin in August 2022.
The U.S. District Court in Los Angeles revealed charges against these five individuals, including conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire resulting in death and using a machine gun in a violent crime with deadly outcomes.
What did Lil Durk do?
Lil Durk, a well-known rapper and founder of the Only the Family (OTF) hip-hop group, has had several legal troubles, including a significant arrest in 2019 for attempted murder. In February 2019, he and his close friend, rapper King Von, were accused of a shooting in Atlanta, Georgia.
Prosecutors alleged that they fired guns at a man outside The Varsity, a popular restaurant, robbing him of thousands of dollars in cash and jewelry. The victim was injured but survived.
After investigations, Durk turned himself in to authorities in May 2019, facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and other felonies. He was later released on a $250,000 bond while his case was ongoing.
The case lingered until October 2022 but charges against Lil Durk were eventually dropped. Authorities ultimately did not have enough evidence to proceed, and Durk maintained his innocence throughout the legal proceedings.
Now, the five people connected to OTF have been charged with the murder-for-hire conspiracy, reportedly targeting fellow rapper Quando Rondo due to his suspected involvement in the 2020 death of King Von.
In August 2022, a gunman named Terrell Bowman, opened fire on Quando Rondo, while he was at a gas station in West Hollywood with his sister and cousin. While Rondo and his sister escaped unharmed, his cousin, a 24-year-old, was shot multiple times and died as a result.
The indictment states that after locating Bowman in Los Angeles, Grant, a member of the OTF collective booked a hotel room on August 18, 2022. He then met with his co-conspirators and armed with multiple firearms, they rented a car to track down Bowman’s black Cadillac, as reported by The Chicago Tribune.
According to prosecutors, flights and rental cars were charged to credit cards associated with OTF. A surveillance image included in the indictment showed Grant's BMW rental trailing Bowman's Cadillac.
When they arrived at the gas station, Asa Houston drove down an alley and let Keith Jones, David Brian Lindsey, and another unidentified individual out of the car. Surveillance footage allegedly captured the men aiming their weapons and shooting at the vehicle, resulting in Saviay’a Robinson's (Rondo's cousin's) death.
After the attack, the men reportedly went to a hamburger restaurant, where they allegedly discussed payment for their actions. The following day, Wilson, Jones, Lindsey, and Houston flew back to Chicago from San Diego.
The incident highlights the intense rivalries within the Chicago drill rap scene, which has a reputation for gang-affiliated violence and gritty, often confrontational lyrics.
What's next for Lil Durk?
The five men of Lil Durk's OTF entourage, identified as Kavon London Grant, Deandre Dontrell Wilson, Keith Jones, David Brian Lindsey, and Asa Houston, face charges related to the murder plot, including conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire and violent crime with a machine gun.
If convicted, they could face the death penalty. According to reports, Lil Durk's OTF funds were allegedly used for logistics, like flights and car rentals, in orchestrating the attack on Quando Rondo and his entourage in Los Angeles, which left Rondo’s cousin dead.
