Haley Joel Osment, who is known for his performance as a child artist in The Sixth Sense, recently made headlines after bring arrested and charged with public intoxication and possession of cocaine.
The incident brings back to focus the former child star’s first major run-in with the law, which happened almost two decades ago. Osment had his first encounter with the law in 2006 at age 18, following a car crash in Los Angeles.
What charges did Haley Joel Osment face in 2006?
Police reports at the time stated that Haley Joel Osment was driving a 1995 Saturn station wagon when he lost control of the vehicle, crashing it into a mailbox and brick pillar. He was left with a broken rib and shoulder blade, plus cuts and bruises.
Officials believed that alcohol may have contributed to the crash. Haley Joel Osment was not breathalyzed at the scene, but was later arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of marijuana.
He later pleaded no contest to each charge. According to TMZ, the actor was sentenced to three years of probation, 60 hours of alcohol rehabilitation, and six months of Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. He was also fined $1,500.
A look into Haley Joel Osment’s recent arrest and legal problems
Flash forward to 2025, and Osment, 37, is back in trouble with the law. He was apprehended on April 8, 2025, in the Mammoth Mountain ski area of California after ski patrol responded to calls about an intoxicated man.
Officers noticed that Haley Joel Osment appeared to be visibly intoxicated, and eventually found a substance that they believed to be cocaine in his belongings. He was charged with misdemeanor counts of public intoxication and possession of cocaine by the Mono County District Attorney.
Clips of Osment being detained have been controversial as well. The video features the actor in a state of apparent incapacity, having difficulty following commands from officers, and reportedly using antis*mitic slurs. The actor has since published an apology, saying he deeply regrets his behavior, which he says was due to a blackout.
"What came out of my mouth was nonsensical garbage – I’ve let the Jewish community down and it devastates me," he told The Post in a recent interview.
Haley Joel Osment also said that he had just lost his home during the January 2025 Eaton Fire in Altadena, and that the emotional toll of that was part of what shaped his state of mind during the incident.
"The past few months of loss and displacement have broken me down to a very low emotional place... I don’t ask for anyone’s forgiveness, but I promise to atone for my terrible mistake," he added.
