Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy director reveals why Friends actors don't appear in the documentary
Robert Palumbo has directed and is one of the executive producers of the Peacock documentary. The film does not feature the interviews of Perry's Friends co-stars including David Schwimmer, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, and Lisa Kudrow. Palumbo, in an interview with The New York Post, said that he can understand their hesitation to show up. But he feels they might open up a few years down the line:
“Understandably, they were reluctant to go on a documentary about Matthew at this point. Maybe many years down the line …We understand their decision not to appear."
He further spoke about how he heard about the tragic news and slowly got to know the details of it:
“Many of us remember getting that news that he had died, and then eventually getting the details [that gave] sort of waves of anger … I feel like people still have him in their hearts and minds. As the facts began to come out about what happened to him, how he died and what possibly could have been a ring of people that sort of facilitated his death, I was really upset.”
Perry was found dead on October 28, 2023, in his bathtub at the age of 54 at his California home. The autopsy revealed that ketamine was found in his body, and the manner of his death was accidental drowning. Before his death, Perry was open about his addiction problems.
Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy features an interview of Morgan Fairchild who played Chandler Bing's mother on the sitcom. Palumbo also spoke about how his legacy will also include how he helped people fight addiction:
“I think he will have a legacy of helping other people. And Morgan [Fairchild] thought that was really the most important thing to communicate.”
The film also explores the five people who were arrested for their involvement in Perry's death who have pleaded not guilty.
