Cynthia Erivo took to her Instagram story on October 16, referencing a fan-edited poster of the Wicked movie. The actress responded to viral memes when co-star Ariana Grande pointed out that she looks green in the film's trailer.
"This is the wildest, most offensive thing I have seen I have seen equal to that awful AI of us fighting, equal to people posting is you ***** green? None of this is funny. None of this is cute. It degrades me. It degrades us."
In the fan-edited poster, Erivo's eyes are covered by her witch's hat, and she has red lipstick on instead of green. When Wicked released its original movie poster art, fans took to express disappointment that it did not do justice to the stage adaptation's iconic poster. While explaining the intent behind the original poster, Cynthia said,
"The original poster is an ILLUSTRATION. I am a real-life human being, who chose to look right at the camera to you, the viewer...because without words we communicate with our eyes."
Jon M. Chu has adapted the Wicked Broadway musical into a two-part movie. The plot is set at the Shiz University of Oz and features the story of an unlikely friendship between Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, who is misunderstood because of her green skin, and Glinda, played by Ariana Grande.
The first part arrives in theaters on November 22; a second will be released in 2025.
"And that is just deeply hurtful," says Cynthia Erivo to the fan-edited poster of the Wicked movie
While bashing an AI-edited poster of the Wicked movie where the actress' hat is dipped lower, and she is shown to have a red lip instead of green, Cynthia Erivo added,
"Our poster is an homage not an imitation, to edit my face and hide my eyes is to erase me. And that is just deeply hurtful."
While speaking to Entertainment Tonight about the storyline, Cynthia Erivo explained that in the first movie, viewers get to know Elphaba as a young lady, and the friendship blossoms between Elphaba and Glinda.
The movie has also expanded on their friendship a bit more. During an interview with Vanity Fair in September for the November issue, Cynthia looked back on her audition and noted that she didn't believe she would be seen. However, Grande had been trying to get the role since she turned 20 in 2013 and had auditioned many times.
