Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow's daughter, Apple Martin, made her debut in society at the Le Bal des Débutantes on November 30, and it didn't go as expected. She was hit with a wave of criticism following a video that went viral, and in her defense, fellow debutante Aliénor Loppin de Montmort told People Magazine she's “the nicest girl ever.”
The event took place at the Hotel Shangri-La in Paris, and in the now-viral video posted by Paris Match, Loppin de Montmort can be seen posing for the cameras when Apple steps in to strike a pose, thereby overshadowing her. The moment was enough to spark accusations against Apple, with some calling her a “mean girl.”
Apple Martin's moments from the debutante ball go viral as she is seen rolling her eyes at her date
Apple Martin was one of 20 women to make their debuts that night, all of whom fell between the ages of 16 and 22. In the past, Lily Collins and Margaret Qualley are known to have made their debut. As for the incident in question, Loppin de Montmort spoke with People Magazine about how she feels about Apple:
"[Apple’s] genuinely the nicest girl ever! She really doesn’t deserve an ounce of what she’s getting. She was the nicest girl ever towards not only me but all the debs!"
Apple Martin attended the annual function with Count Leo Henckel von Donnersmarck as her chevalier. However, another moment to go viral from the show depicts her rolling her eyes at him, sparking another wave of criticism.
Apple Martin sported a custom blue Valentino gown, and as reported by Vogue, Valentino Creative Director Alessandro Michele, and his team took over 750 hours to make it. Per People Magazine, she is also the first woman to wear a Michele gown at the event. Per Vogue magazine, the strapless dress was “fashioned in six dégradé tiers of silk plissé chiffon, cinched at the waist with a black silk bow."
She paired her outfit with blue Valentino sandals, and her parents and brother also sported Valentino outfits. Per People Magazine, Chris and her brother Moses came clad in custom Valentino tuxedos, while Gwyneth had on a black gown from the label's spring 2025 collection. It showed off a sheer, polka-dotted overlay that sat atop a black cami, and the edges of the dress were ruffled and high-necked.
The debutante ball is organized by Ophélie Renouard and aims to raise funds each year in support of children's health. Each debutante is paired with a “chevalier” from a prominent family, and Apple Martin's chevalier, Henckel von Donnersmarck, is the son of Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, a director.
