30 Rock star Alec Baldwin filed a civil lawsuit against prosecutors and investigators from his previous criminal manslaughter trial in Santa Fe, New Mexico on, January 9. The actor has alleged malicious prosecution and civil rights violations in the manslaughter of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the Western movie Rust.

His action comes after New Mexico prosecutors withdrew an appeal of a court's decision to dismiss an involuntary manslaughter charge against Alec Baldwin in late December.

In the lawsuit, Baldwin alleges defamation, saying that prosecutors and investigators intentionally mishandled evidence while pursuing the case. Baldwin included defendants - special prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwives, with three investigators from the Santa Fe County sheriff's office and the county board of commissioners.

The lawsuit read,

"Defendants sought every turn to scapegoat Baldwin for the acts and omissions of others, regardless of the evidence or the law."

Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died on the sets of the movie Rust on the outskirts of Santa Fe, New Mexico after being wounded during a rehearsal in October 2021. Baldwin was the lead actor and co-producer for the movie who pointed a pistol at Hutchins, killing her in the process while wounding director Joel Souza.

Baldwin's trial revealed that ammunition was brought into the Santa Fe county sheriff's office in March by a man who claimed it could be related to Hutchins' killing. Prosecutors noted the ammo as unrelated and unimportant, whereas Baldwin's lawyers alleged that investigators "buried" the evidence in a separate case file and filed a successful motion to dismiss.

A gun supervisor, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, for the Alec Baldwin starred Rust movie, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Reed was convicted in March by a jury on a charge of involuntary manslaughter and had been held for more than a month at the county jail located on the outskirts of Santa Fe. Prosecutors blamed Reed for failing to follow basic gun safety protocols and bringing live ammunition onto the set of Rust after it was clearly expressed as prohibited.

Earlier, Baldwin agreed to pull back the hammer but not the trigger for firing the revolver. Hutchins' parents and younger sister sued Baldwin and other producers of Rust in a New Mexico state court. However, Hutchins' widower and son reached a settlement in a lawsuit.
