The Texas lawyer Tony Buzbee was one of the advocates on the team representing an unknown woman using the alias Jane Doe in her civil lawsuit accusing rappers Sean “Diddy” Combs and Shawn Carter, popularly known as Jay-Z.
Jane Doe had accused the two rappers of s*xually assaulting her when she was a minor. Although the lawsuit was recently dropped, Buzbee has been extensively featured in the news because of his scathing attacks of celebrities accused of s*xual misconduct.
Called a “1-800 lawyer” by Jay-Z who celebrated a “victory” over the Houston-based lawyer’s alleged machinations to extort money from him, Tony Buzbee has been involved in a long tirade of accusations thrown back and forth between him and Jay-Z. The term “1-800 lawyer” seeks to erode the former U.S. Marine’s legal credibility, hinting that such lawyers pay extensive marketing fees and have multitudes of clients.
Tony Buzbee’s multiple plaintiffs
Tony Buzbee, who ran for the post of mayor of Houston twice and lost, is known for bringing multiple civil lawsuits against celebrity perpetrators of alleged s*xual crimes such as s*x trafficking, assault, abuse, drugging, etc.
While the lawsuit against Jay-Z was the most recent accusation, the bulk of these cases name Sean “Diddy” Combs as the defendant. Buzbee is part of the legal team representing more than 50 alleged victims of Combs. In a statement released to Instagram on September 27, 2024, Buzbee said that his firm would be representing,
“more than fifty individuals who suffered sexual assault and abuse at the hands of Sean “Diddy” Combs and his cohorts. This group of brave individuals include both men and women; many were minors when the abuse occurred.”
This statement was posted alongside an image of the press release of the Southern District of New York’s Attorney’s Office, which shared news of Combs’ indictment.
Tony Buzbee vs. Jay-Z
In the wake of the December lawsuit, which was filed again to include Jay-Z’s name as one of the defendants alongside Combs, Jay-Z and Tony Buzbee exchanged multiple accusations against each other’s legal teams.

Jay-Z’s entertainment firm, Roc Nation, alongside Quinn Emanuel (Jay-Z lawyers’ firm), was named in a lawsuit accusing them of canvassing Buzbee’s firm’s past clients.
According to a report by CNN, Buzbee claimed that his clients were offered money to bring false charges against him. As Roc Nation and Quinn Emanuel denied the charges, Jane Doe’s interview with NBC was used to question her credibility. Jay-Z’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, accused Buzbee of not even meeting with his clients before bringing charges against the rapper.
Denying Spiro’s claims, Buzbee talked to CNN, explaining that, although Jane Doe continued to be personally vetted by him, four other lawyers and an investigator had already spoken to her and verified her claims.
Jay-Z and his team continued to question Buzbee’s integrity as TMZ reported that documents submitted by the rapper in February contained evidence of Buzbee sending “demand letters” to Jay-Z asking for compensation in return for not mentioning his name as a defendant. Accusing the lawyer of blackmailing him, Jay-Z was adamant on clearing his name.
While the case against Jay-Z may have been dismissed, Tony Buzbee continues to be a part of public debate due to his involvement in multiple charges against Combs. Buzbee will undoubtedly remain in the limelight as Combs is scheduled to appear for trial on May 5.
