Actress Tina Louise has been in the film and television industry for several decades. However, she has hardly discussed her childhood. At 91, the actress is now opening up about her parents and the difficult situations she faced as a child.
During a recent conversation with The New York Times, Louise revealed her mother, Sylvia Horn, was only 18 when she had her with Joseph Blacker who was 10 years older than her. She was born in New York City. However, it was seemingly not easy for the couple as they got divorced when Louise was four years old.
"I didn't have hugs," said Tina describing her childhood.
Moving forward, Tina Louise's childhood went by in boarding schools. Her mother sent her to Ardsley and was allowed to visit her every Sunday. However, her parents did not always come to see their daughter. One day, when they did, they got into a fight that heightened Louise's feeling of loneliness. Louise also revealed how she did not have "loving situations" while growing up.
When Louise turned nine, she moved in with her father who had married another woman. While she was happy to finally have a nice home, about two years later she began moving back and forth between her mother and her father's house. Her mother had married a third time and her new husband was a wealthy doctor.
As she moved in with her mother, little did she know she would not be able to meet her father for more than a decade. It was by the time that Tina Louise made her acting debut with God's Little Acre when she finally saw her father again.
She was on the edge of stardom and her career's trajectory escalated from that point. Besides acting, she also did several modeling jobs. Some of the most popular acting jobs include working in The Hnagman, The Trap, For Those Who Think Young, and Day Of The Outlaw.
Her most memorable role was as movie star Ginger Grant in Gilligan's Island.
Tina Louise defends her mother's methods of parenting
Tina Louise, during the interview, said she was mad at her father for not fighting to meet her. She never forgave him.
"I was mad at him because he didn't go to court."
On the other hand, she argued that she had a better understanding of her mother's parenting methods growing up. She revealed that her mother was only three years old when her maternal grandmother died. Louise also added that her mother did not have a loving environment growing up. Her four marriages further explain her need for love.
"She didn't have the loving she needed." "She always needed a man to lean on," Louise added.
Tina Louise also never talked to her mother about her time at Ardsley.

As the actress missed several aspects of loving in her childhood, she now spends a lot of time with students in schools. In 1996, she joined Learning Leaders, an organization that trained people to become tutors in public schools.
Tina, who now lives in a one-bedroom apartment in Manhattan, regularly goes to school. She calls spending time there "better than vitamins." Louise believes that she cannot go back and have a better childhood but she enjoys her time there.
Spending time with children also encouraged Tina Louise to write two books: When I Grow Up and What does a Bee Do?
