Tegan Maccormack, better known to the world as Tigga Mac, has revealed she is battling breast cancer.
The Australian influencer-cum-cake decorator shocked fans when she took to Instagram on April 16 to reveal the news. In a lengthy statement, she revealed that the illness was caught early on and is "treatable," noting that it's "going to be ok."
Known for her talent and expansive career in baking of over 10 years, Tigga Mac boasts a strong following of nearly half a million people online. She regularly shares videos of her creations online, all of which she makes at home. The Melbourne-based influencer co-founded her business, Cake For Days, with her best friend Katie in 2017.
At the time, she started it because the local cake shop she was working at had shut down. 'I was shocked and in need of a job, so we launched the business and started taking orders the following week,' Tegan told Daily Mail Australia. Since then, she has gained popularity for replicating several popular movie characters, among other things.
Everything we know about Tigga Mac's diagnosis as she urges women everywhere to get themselves checked
In her statement on Instagram, Tigga Mac penned:
"Okie Dokie and G'day everyone! Just wanted to fill you all in on something that has been going on with me. Unfortunately, a couple of weeks ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The good news is, we've caught it early. It's treatable. And I'm going to be ok."
She called the diagnosis "a big shock," saying, "the last couple of weeks have been rough."
"So what's the plan? First step is surgery, which is next week. Then I'll start my treatment," she explained. "It's all been very overwhelming and scary, but I have the best support network. I'm surrounded by the most amazing family and friends."
She also noted that she was "lucky" she "caught this when I did."
"I found the lump myself, I went to my GP, got scans done a couple of days later and then the day after that I had my diagnosis," she said, calling on other women to get regularly checked. "Cancer is so common but somehow you still don't expect it to happen to you. It still doesn't feel real, but it is."
She also asserted that she would be keeping her treatment plans private from the world:
"I hope you all understand that it's something I want to do privately. This channel has always been my happy place, an escape from the world. I want to keep it that way," she wrote. "I'll still be coming in to the cake kitchen whenever I feel up to it. I'll be making fun things any chance I get!"
Hours after she shared the news online, Tigga Mac took to her Instagram Stories to thank her followers for their support, noting that she was "so nervous sharing this news. I was in a little bubble and now that bubble has popped. But I'm so glad it's out."
