Sean Baker became the first-ever recipient of four Oscars in one night for his film Anora at the 2025 Academy Awards. The indie filmmaker won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing, becoming the first person to bag four statuettes at one ceremony.

As Baker receives his accolades, attention has turned to his wife and collaborator Samantha Quan, who had a pivotal role in the making of Anora.

Samantha Quan is a Canadian-born producer, writer, and former actress who has been a major creative force behind Baker’s recent films. Quan, who hails from Vancouver, also got her start in Hollywood as an actress and has made appearances on television series like NCIS: Los Angeles and Castle.

Quan’s relationship with Baker started unexpectedly. According to CBC News, the couple first met in Los Angeles, at a gym class, where Baker introduced himself by giving Quan a DVD of an independent film he had recently watched.

Samantha Quan was not yet well versed in indie cinema at the time, but her partnership with Sean Baker eventually lured her into the world of independent filmmaking.

She had a crucial role in the making of The Florida Project (2017), leading casting and coaching young performers, and later became an associate producer on the film. By the time Baker made Red Rocket (2021), she was all-in as a producer, controlling many aspects of production.
