Sam Moore, legendary Grammy Award-winning recording artist and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, has passed away. He died on Friday in Coral Gables, Florida, at the age of 89. The exact cause of death is unknown, having succumbed to an "unspecified surgery" the New York Post reports.
Joyce and Sam Moore tied the knot in 1982 in Europe. By the time of his demise, they had been married for well over four decades. In the later years of their lives, the pair joined forces to help offer master classes and education regarding the music industry at FIU.
Joyce also served as the assistant Maître D at Mr. Kelly’s in Chicago, but she is best known for her vocal support of the Performance Rights Act of 2009. She also worked as Moore's manager since the '80s, having stood by him through his struggles with drug addiction. At the time of writing, not much else is known about Joyce Moore.
All about Sam Moore: The life and legacy he leaves behind
Sam Moore is most known as one half of the duo of Sam and Dave, though his former partner, Prater, passed away in a car accident in 1988. Moore served as the tenor while Prater, the baritone. Their stint together ran from 1961 to 1981 having first met each other as gospel singers.
The two produced some massive hits, including Soul Man and Hold On! I’m Comin’. The former even went on to nab them a Grammy Award while over the years, it has been dubbed their signature song. They were also famously known by their nickname, the "Sultans of Sweat" and "Double Dynamite."
Towards the end of their tenure, however, their relationship had grown contentious. Their last show was on stage on New Year's Eve in 1981, following which, they never spoke again.
“Nicknamed “Double Dynamite,” Sam & Dave became famous for their energetic, infectious live performances during the late ’60s, which complemented the overall high quality of their studio work,” a Stax profile stated, per The New York Post. “They may have communicated on-stage, but behind the scenes, it was reported that the duo could hardly stand each other’s presence.”
Speaking about their strained relationship, Moore told the Independent in 2002, referring to the time Prater took a gun and shot his then-wife:
"I initiated the break-up. But I’ve seen very many more evil and abusive men than Dave. After the incident with the gun, I said to Dave, ‘Look, I’ll sing with you, but I’ll never talk to you again, ever.’ So for 12 years, we worked together, but our lives were completely separate.”
Sam Moore was eventually inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 by Billy Joel. By the early '80s, his wife became his manager, and he went on to perform for six U.S. Presidents, including Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump.
Sam Moore leaves behind his wife, Joyce, daughter Michelle, and grandchildren Tash and Misha.
