Roger Nores, one of Liam Payne's close friends and Argentina-based businessman, has refuted claims of abandoning the singer just hours before he died. In speaking to The Daily Mail, Nores also denied being a suspect in the case, asserting that no one had raided his home in Buenos Aires. He told the outlet on Thursday,
"I never abandoned Liam. I went to his hotel three times that day and left 40 minutes before this happened. There were over 15 people at the hotel lobby chatting and joking with him when I left.”
Who is Roger Nores?
Roger Nores is a multimillionaire businessman based in Argentina. According to Forbes, Nores made his fortune in the gas-fired power industry. Nores and his company, StoneWay Capital, can be attributed to supplying electricity to 600,000 homes in and around Buenos Aires.
Nores founded StoneWay Capital in 2013, just after launching Araucaria Group. In addition to the energy industry, Nores has played a role in developing modular liquefied natural gas technology in Pennsylvania.
Nores earned a Bachelor of Arts/Science from Los Molinos and the same from Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, and in 2018, he made it to Forbes' 30 Under 30 - Energy list.
Roger Nores says he has been "missing his friend every day"
Three people were cuffed in connection with the former One Direction star's death: an unnamed friend, later identified as an Argentinian businessman, a hotel employee, and an alleged drug dealer. The National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor's Office first announced the update, and not long after, the 31-year-old businessman issued his statements.
As per initial reports, while the person was not identified, he was described as Payne's self-proclaimed manager. Regardless, a Daily Mail report tied the unidentified friend to Nores, as they had been charged with "abandoning a person followed by death." According to the outlet, the individual has also been hit with peddling drugs.
Roger Nores said his peace, doubling down on his stance:
"I could have never imagined something like this would happen. I've given my statement to the prosecutor on October 17 as a witness and I haven't spoken to any police officer or prosecutor ever since. I wasn't Liam's manager he was just my very dear friend and please refer to the email I sent to Liam and his team on August 23. I'm really heartbroken with this tragedy, and I've been missing my friend every day."
Roger Nores pens a letter to Payne's father, claiming he is going to stay "fully out of the picture"
According to Page Six, Roger Nores and Liam Payne first met in 2020 and quickly became good friends. The former was instrumental in helping the Strip That Down singer stay clean over the years. In August, Nores emailed Payne's father and his management team, asserting his worries over the singer's struggles:
"Liam stayed at my friend’s ranch down in Palm Beach and since the first day he arrived he was monitored and treated by professional doctors who specialize in addictions. He stayed fully clean without access to any hard drug (sic) during his whole stay. The plan was for him to work on the preparation for a music tour and stay healthy and busy with work. A plan he successfully followed during his whole stay in the US.”
The email, as reported by Page Six, continued:
"I’m really concerned for his well-being while he is out there and I hope you can bring professional doctors to check on his health regularly as soon as possible as I did while he was out in the US. I am going to stay fully out of the picture and disconnected from now on and I wish you all the best with Liam’s health and career.”
The former One Direction band member plunged to his death on October 16. Hours before, he displayed erratic behavior, multiple outlets have reported, and was seemingly in a "state of semi or total unconsciousness," per Page Six.
According to the Daily Mail, at the time of his death, alcohol, cocaine, and an anti-depressant were found in his system. Despite initial speculations, death by suicide was ruled out.
