The British Fashion Council (BFC) will be giving Issa Rae the Pandora Leader of the Change Award at the Fashion Awards 2024 (TFA) on Monday, December 2. The event will be held at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Rae's friend and Insecure co-star, Yvonne Orji, will be presenting the award.
The Pandora Leader of Change Award is given to "a person who leads with innovation to create positive change globally. They consistently challenge the status quo. Their work is empowering, progressive, and forward-thinking. They use their platform to positively shift perceptions as a result of their deep commitment to moving the dial when it comes to authentic representation."
Issa Rae is a "fierce advocate for civil and women's rights movements"
Reflecting on the actress, writer, and producer's work, Caroline Rush, Chief Executive of the British Fashion Council said:
"We are thrilled to honour Issa Rae with the Pandora Leader of Change Award at The Fashion Awards 2024. Rae’s work has inspired and resonated with people all over the globe, and she is a fierce advocate for civil and women’s rights movements, always championing equality and social justice in her acting and writing."
Her statement goes on:
"She consistently uses her platform to spotlight the lack of diversity in Hollywood and call for more representation in the industry, including seeing people of colour behind the scenes. She is wholeheartedly committed to moving conversations forward and bringing voices to life that are usually absent and underrepresented in order to open doors for others. She truly embodies the principles of this Award and we are so excited to celebrate her in December.”
Berta de Pablos-Barbier, Chief Marketing Officer, Pandora added:
“She truly embodies the spirit of the Pandora Leader of Change Award… Through her work acting, directing, and producing, Issa amplifies creative voices from her community and beyond. Inspiring authenticity and championing inclusivity. Issa’s dedication to meaningful change and uplifting others makes her a remarkable leader of change, and we are so proud to honor her.”
Issa Rae first grabbed the attention of the world with her award-winning web series, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. She spawned the series out of an attempt to tackle the lack of Black female characters on TV. She then went on to create and star in the HBO series, Insecure, which nabbed several Emmys and Golden Globe nominations.
In 2020, Issa Rae went on to found Hoorae, a media company. Under it, she produced A Black Lady Sketch Show and Rap Sh!t. That same year, she became co-owner and face of the Black-owned, vegan hair care line, Sienna Naturals.
Issa Rae's film credits also include the massive box-office hit, Barbie and Spider-man: Across The Spider-Verse, among other things, and she has worked with nonprofit organizations like Destination Crenshaw, an initiative designed to empower Black Angelenos.
TFA 2024 presented by Pandora is the main fundraiser for the BFC Foundation. According to the official website, it "celebrates the role of fashion at the intersection of culture and entertainment, spotlighting creative talent and telling the stories of the year in fashion."
