Craig Kallman serves as the CEO and President of Atlantic Records. Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, Muni Long, took to Instagram to post a video where she can be seen lip-syncing to a Boosie voiceover responding "No". In the caption, she shares her frustration against the record label for asking her to write "soulful" songs for non-Black artists. While mentioning that she refused the request, Long noted in the caption:
"Me to the President of Atlantic asking me to write 'soulful' songs for non-melanates artists. And when I said NO one of 'em gone say, 'You can reach in that Priscilla Renea (her real name) vault and see what you have in there."
Long is known to have written hits for A-listers including Rihanna, Chris Brown, Mariah Carey, and Mary J. Belije. She was involved in working with Ariana Grande's Imagine, and Madonna's Gang Bang. Long is signed with Def Jam through a partnership with her label, Supergiant Records.
"Boy, do you know what a VAULT is?" says Muni Long to Atlantic Records
While revealing that she turned down Atlantic Records' requests to write for "non-melanated" artists, Muni Long mentioned that the Records then asked her to "reach" in her vault and pull out something, to which she responded saying:
"Boy, do you know what a VAULT is? That's where you keep the valuables. If you don't get somewhere, sit down. I wanted to cuss them out so bad, y'all."
Muni Long has been a strong advocate for Black artists. She praised Beyonce while speaking to The Breakfast Club in February 2024, for her breakthrough in country music as a female black artist:
"When you are in Nashville, attempting to showcase yourself as a country artist (of color)...it doesn't match what the traditional image is. One thing that you realize is that as soon as you walk in the door, their opinion changes based on what they see. That's something you can only experience physically and in person, and I think Beyonce has transcended that."
The artist who once used to write popular songs for artists also created her name as a solo singer eventually making it to the VMAs. Initially, Muni Long's debut album, Jukebox, in 2009 didn't chart, prompting her to focus on songwriting. but in 2021, Muni Long was back and earned a Grammy for Best R&B Performance.
Her hit single Time Machine gained popularity all over social media and radio stations upon its release.
