Paapa Essiedu is confirmed to portray Severus Snape in HBO’s Harry Potter series, as Warner Bros. Discovery unveiled the primary cast recently. The untitled Wizarding World project will be released next year on Max.

The 34-year-old Gangs of London star is a British actor of Ghanaian descent. Paapa Essiedu has been married to actress-comedian Rosa Robson since 2023 and has been in a relationship since 2016. Despite being together for almost a decade, they have kept their relationship private but have been snapped together at public events.

Robson, a Cambridge University alumnus, has appeared in Black Mountain Poets, She Is Love, Buffering (series), and more. The 33-year-old actress has also done theater work like her spouse, Paapa Essiedu, who commenced his career by joining the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in 2012.

The Londoner garnered acclaim for his stage work while acting in plays such as Hamlet and King Lear. Essiedu won the first prize at the 2016 Ian Charleson Awards for both plays. He portrayed the titular character in Hamlet and played Edmund in King Lear. Besides his theater accolades, Paapa Essiedu has also received two BAFTA TV Award nominations.

The actor commented on portraying the characters again in New York (King Lear) and Washington (Hamlet) productions in subsequent years. He spoke to Guildhall School of Music and Drama in a 2019 interview:

"That was a big challenge, to create a world that felt unique and specific to the creatives and artists that we have with us, and not just try and do what we did two years ago. I’ve got nothing but love and respect for all the new cast members who brought such vitality, imagination and bravery in their approach.”

The Guildhall School of Music and Drama alumnus also appeared in multiple TV and film roles. Paapa Essiedu acted in The Lazarus Project, Black Mirror (episode Demon 79), Murder on the Orient Express (2017), and The Outrun. As mentioned, he will next be seen as Snape in the Harry Potter series in 2026.

Previously, Alan Rickman gained worldwide recognition for his iconic portrayal of Professor Snape. Essiedu will have a challenging task in delivering his interpretation of the rather complex character.

Paapa Essiedu is joined by John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Nick Frost, and more on the Max adaptation

The Lazarus Project actor is all set to enact the role of professor of Potions at Hogwarts. The two-time BAFTA TV nominee is joined by John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon, and Paul Whitehouse as the main cast.

Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod announced on behalf of Warner Bros. Discovery:

“We are happy to announce the casting of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse to play Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Hagrid, Quirrell and Filch.”

They added:

“We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.”

Francesca Gardiner is the showrunner and executive producer for the upcoming Harry Potter adaptation. Mark Mylod, also the series' executive producer, will direct some of the episodes. Each season will reportedly be based on a specific book from the series authored by J.K. Rowling.

The series will stream exclusively via Max and serve as a reboot to the Daniel Radcliffe-starrer films.
