On Wednesday, April 16, Nora Aunor breathed her last, leaving behind an immaculate legacy and lasting impact on the arts. She was 71. Over the span of her multi-decade career, Aunor became one of the biggest stars in Philippine cinema. The news broke when her children posted about the sad turn of events on social media, although no further details were provided regarding the cause or even the place of her death.
She is survived by children Lotlet, Ian, Matet, Kiko, and Kenneth de León from her previous marriage to Christopher de León, which was dissolved in 1996. In a touching Instagram post, Lotlet de León broke the news and shared some kind words about her mother:
“She was a star not only on screen, but in the hearts of many—and stars like hers never stop shining.”
De León went on to add that funeral plans and other details will be available in the coming days.
Nora Aunor - An inspirational life story explored
Aunor was born into an unfortunate set of circumstances. Her family was impoverished, and during her youth, she regularly sold water in a train station located in the eastern Camarines Sur province to raise money for the household. She first gained fame as a singer in her teens in the 1960s before she decided to pivot towards acting.
Over the course of her career, she displayed the work ethic she learned as a child, amassing over 200 credits in film and television. Her body of work included many Philippine cinematic classics, and she would go on to win several awards for her acting prowess. Interestingly, Aunor was still at it as of last year with a starring role in Mananambal (The Healer). She would also appear on the TV series Lilet Matias, Attorney-at-Law.
Aunor was given the country's biggest honor in her field in 2022 when she was duly named a National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts. Former President Benigno Aquino III had denied her the accolade in 2014 due to a previous drug charge in the United States, a move which ruffled feathers, especially seeing how the charges were dropped in 2007.
It is a huge loss for her family and country, who hope to embody the best of her and carry that forward to help future generations of artists.
