Nelsy Cruz, governor of the province of Montecristi in the Dominican Republic and the sister of former MLB player, died on April 8 in a nightclub roof collapse. Nelsy Cruz's death was confirmed by her brother through an Instagram post announcing her funeral arrangements. A part of the statement, translated into English by People magazine reads:
"With deep sorrow, the Cruz Martinez family reports the sensitive death of our beloved sister, mother, daughter, aunt and friend, Nelsy M Cruz Martinez, who in life performed with dedication, commitment and love for her people and her community. We thank all those who have expressed their love and solidarity at this difficult time. Her legacy of service and love for others will live forever in our hearts.”
The incident took place in the early hours of April 8, 2025, at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, when the roof collapsed during the performance of popular Dominican Merengue singer, Rubby Pérez, who also passed away in the aftermath of the incident.

Nelsy Milagros Cruz Marinez was one of three children born to Nelson Cruz Sr and Dominga Cruz. She grew up with her two other older siblings, Olga and Nelson Cruz, the seven time Major League All Star player, in the town of Las Matas de Santa Cruz.
The incident on Tuesday lead to the deaths of 98 people, with more than 150 people injured, as reported by BBC. Juan Manuel Mendez, Director of the Emergency Operations Center, said that they were doing everything possible to rescue the hundreds still reported to be trapped under the rubble.
"We are still working, searching for people in the rubble. We presume that many of them are still alive. That's why authorities here with their teams will not stop until we find the last person in that rubble."
Along with Nelsy Cruz, former Detroit Tigers player Octavio Dotel, and Dominican baseball player Tony Enrique Blanco Cabdera are also among those who lost their lives.
The news of their sudden passing has shocked everyone, with fans taking to X to share their heartfelt condolences.
The Seattle Marines posted on X, saying:
"We extend our deepest sympathies to all those impacted by the tragedy last night at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, including the loved ones of Nelsy Cruz, sister of Mariners legend Nelson Cruz, and former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel 🇩🇴💙"
Ángel Salcedo, the Minister of Culture, also posted on X in light of Nelsy Cruz's tragic death:
'I deeply regret the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Nelsy Cruz, governor of Montecristi province, which occurred in the tragic event at the Jet Set nightclub."
According to Associated Press, Nelsy Cruz had called the President Luis Abinader first while trapped under the debris to inform him of her situation. Cruz was eventually rescued from the rubble, but died in the hospital from her injuries.
Three days of national mourning has been declared by President Louis Abinader in Dominican Republic, as rescue efforts continue. He posted a message of support on X, saying:
“We deeply regret the tragedy that occurred at the Jet Set nightclub. All rescue agencies have provided the necessary assistance and are working tirelessly in the rescue efforts. Our prayers are with the affected families.”
The Jet Set nightclub, where Nelsy Cruz and other prominent personalities were guests, was one of the most famous outlets in the area, known for its special performances on Monday nights. An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the roof collapse.
