Hip-hop icon Mary J. Blige has been in a legal feud with Misa Hylton.

According to AllHipHop, rapper Vado and Hylton recently sued the What's the 411? artist for allegedly sabotaging their business relations. In the $5 million lawsuit, the plaintiffs accused Mary J. Blige and his company of withholding the release of Vado’s album and interfering with his contract with M.I.S.A. Management.

Misa Hylton is a well-known fashion designer and stylist. The Mount Vernon native started her career in the ‘90s at 17 and initially styled R&B group Jodeci. In subsequent years, Hylton collaborated with many brands and styled various artists, including Lil’ Kim and Mary J. Blige.

The 51-year-old stylist is also known for her relationship with Sean Combs. During the early ‘90s, Misa Hylton dated Diddy for some time, and both share a son, Justin Dior (born 1993). After their split, the stylist and controversial record producer remained friends, as the former recounted on The Premium Pete Show (via People Magazine):

“We’ve had our ups and downs and our fights too and we had our rough patches, but I think ultimately it’s always about the children. We were really close at one time and were really good friends.”

However, last year in May, Misa Hylton displayed her support for Cassie after she accused Diddy of alleged assault in 2016, which was seemingly captured in CCTV footage released by CNN. Misa didn’t address the allegations against Sean "Diddy" Combs again in public after her currently unavailable Instagram post in favor of the Long Way 2 Go singer.

Hylton, who is a global creative partner for MCM Worldwide, also has two other sons from her marriage to Jojo Brim. Their relationship didn’t last long, but the renowned stylist is still friends with her ex-husband. Last year, she shared a heartfelt post dedicated to Brim, revealing that Happily Ever After by Case was inspired by their story.

Misa Hylton and Mary J. Blige’s professional relationship started in the ‘90s

Before they were involved in a legal battle, the renowned stylist shared a professional relationship with the Growing Pains singer-songwriter. Blige, along with Lil’ Kim, has been among the celebrities Hylton has styled since the ‘90s. In 2019, Mary and Lil’ Kim attended the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of The Remix: Hip Hop X Fashion, a documentary centered around Misa’s work during the ‘90s, to support their longtime stylist.

In a conversation with ABC Audio, Hylton reflected upon her professional dynamic and friendship with the singer-rapper:

“We’re a great team and I understand how she [Mary] understands. We were both from Westchester County. [...] And anyone from Westchester knows we have our own, like, swagger and style. We both love hip hop music. We both love fur, boots and everything that comes from black fashion and hip hop culture. So it was a natural fit.”

Misa Hylton added:

“I just bring [Mary’s] ideas to life and add my style aesthetic to it. We both just love everything about both of our creativity. Her music inspires me to just who she is. I mean, she’s the illest, she’s the best.”

The friends and frequent collaborators are at opposite ends of a legal battle, as Misa Hylton, with rapper Vado, has sued Mary J. Blige and her company, Beautiful Life Productions. According to AllHipHop, the suit alleges that the Work That singer tried to convince the rapper to break ties with M.I.S.A. during meetings at different events and gatherings, where the management’s representatives were absent.

Vado and Misa Hylton alleged that Mary J. Blige’s security chief wanted to sign the rapper. It was further claimed that Beautiful Life Productions withheld the release of the rapper’s album. Per the allegations, Mary J. Blige reportedly stated in private messages that she would not release the album or allow Vado to tour until he severed ties with M.I.S.A.

According to AllHipHop, Vado and Hylton are seeking $5M in damages for “breach of contract, emotional distress, and interference with business relationships.” At the same time, they have also asked for an injunction to avoid future interferences.
