Although Ryan Coogler's Sinners mostly sheds light on Michael B. Jordan and his portrayal as Smoke and Stack in the film, another character shines through, and that is Miles Caton as Sammie, the musical prodigy whose gift invites the vicious vampires to the town. A musician primarily, Caton's performance is captivating and convincing, and you can't help but marvel at his singing prowess, which is definitely one of the highlights of the film.

Coogler and casting director Francine Maisler looked for their Sammie all over the world. The difficult part was finding someone who could act well and be a good musician. Through countless scouting, they finally landed on Miles Caton, and the director described his audition tape and why it stood out to him.

Talking to Variety, Coogler says,

“He was just in the dark — like he didn’t turn his lights on. Something about that was, like, so intriguing. This kid looked like he was in his basement, like in between homework assignments. But he had this voice — a once in a lifetime voice — and he also felt like the character.”

Caton is the son of gospel singer Timiney Figueroa and has been a performer since a very young age. He has even joined H.E.R. on her tour. A gifted singer, no doubt, Caton's performance in Sinners has been nothing short of mesmerizing, as the heart of the story and Smoke and Stack's cousin, even starring in an intense scene with the villain Remmick, where he faces off.

For Miles Caton, his debut project working with such A-listers has been nothing short of a dream. The actor reflected on the intensive training that went into the role and how it felt to be surrounded by such great people on set. Caton opened up about his experience in an interview with Variety, where he talked about what it was like to see himself on the big screen.

Talking about what it was like to see himself on the big screen, the actor said,

“I’m overwhelmed. It’s still hard to process. It’s different filming than getting to see it on the actual screen. I was like, ‘Damn, that’s me!'”

He then opened up on his experience working with Jordan as he added,

"Mike is a great person, man. He’s always supported me and has just been a dope person throughout the whole process. He’s always willing to give me advice and help me with different acting techniques. One thing that I learned was that you can’t be afraid to make mistakes. Mike taught me that it’s about being present and having a conversation within the scene."

Sinners is available in theatres.
