Michael Haley, best known for his role as a voice actor on MTV's Superhero show The Maxx, has passed away at 67 on the morning of April 5, after a "very abrupt battle with cancer.", according to Entertainment Weekly.

His son, Brendan Haley, in a statement to Entertainment Weekly, announced his death, noting,

"It is with a heavy heart I write that in the early hours of Saturday morning, my dad, Michael Haley, passed away after a very abrupt battle with cancer which ahd been diagnosed mere months prior. Our family remains shocked and saddened by the rapid onset of his illness, but despite these tragic circumstances, we pressed close to ensure he was comfortable and surrounded by those he loved fiercely in the last days of his life."

Michael was also known for his appearance in films like Grease and the 1976 version of King Kong.


More about Michael Haley's life and career

Born in 1957 in Southern California, Michael Haley began acting early. His very first role was that of a background actor in 1970s blockbusters, including the 1976 version of King Kong starring Jessica Lange and Jeff Bridges and Grease in 1978. He was studying at Culver City High School, and heard about Greese's musical production through friends.

After graduating, Haley was accepted to London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts but ended up declining the opportunity to focus on his career in Los Angeles and New York.

While he was working for The Maxx, Haley also gave his voice to Blizzard Entertainment's seminal video game Diablo. Later on, Michael Haley went on to work as a broadcast engineer for Southern California's PBS station, KCET, until 2015, while taking on small roles.

Haley's most recent and final voice performance was in an episode of the horror-comedy audio series It Listens From the Radio, which he worked on with his partner, Michael Verrati, during the COVID-19 pandemic. He played the Crunch Munch monster in the episode Balanced Breakfast.

In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, Haley's son, Brendan Haley noted that he remembers his father as "innately kind with a goofy sense of humor", "fearless and unique talent." Brendan also mentioned,

"While we miss him dearly, dad can always be found roaming the wilds of that other jungle world with the Leopard Queen, performing teremndous feats of heroism."

Michael Haley is survived by his wife, his daughter, and his son, Brendan Haley.
