Hollywood legend Marla Gibbs received the Hollywood Legacy Award at the American Black Film Festival Honors on Monday. The 93-year-old icon, whose prolific career spans over five decades, was awarded for her contributions to cinema and television.
The industry veteran is known for her iconic character of Florence Johnson in the 70s sitcom The Jeffersons. This performance earned her five Emmy nominations for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Gibbs was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2021.
In her acceptance speech, she said
"I'm also excited to be honored today. To be honored is wonderful. Especially while you're still here on the planet,” Gibbs began her acceptance speech."
She further added:
"I had some ladies come to me and they said, ‘Marla, I’ve always wanted to act. Do you think it’s too late?’ I said, ‘Are you still breathing?’ They said, ‘Yes.' It’s not too late. As long as you’re here, and you’re still breathing."
The 227 star also added that she is ready to come back and start working again:
"And my agents, who have won the award several times as the best agents. They know that I am ready to work again. Anybody got any projects?”
Marla Gibbs is a mother to three: Angela, Jordan, and Dorian.

The comedic legend, born Margaret Theresa Bradley, married Jordan Gibbs in 1955. The two met in high school and went on to have three children. The couple later divorced in 1973 but continued to remain friends until his death in 2019.
Their children, Angela Elayne Gibbs, Jordan Gibbs, and Dorian Gibbs, have a close-knit relationship. Marla Gibbs often posts pictures of her children on her Instagram, showing the deep love that exists within her family.
Angela Gibbs followed in her mother's footsteps, building a successful acting career with roles in shows like Hacks, Black Jesus, This is Us, and The Fosters. She starred alongside her legendary mother in an episode of the ABC sitcom Not Dead Yet. Angela has received two NAACP Image Awards for her role as a producer in 227 and the Broadway production of the play Checkmates.
The actress took to social media to congratulate her mother for her recent recognition.
"CONGRATULATIONS MOM!!! We stand in AWE of YOU!" she wrote.
Jordan Gibbs, Marla Gibbs' second child, is not directly part of the entertainment industry. He works as an engineer and real estate broker. Despite staying out of the spotlight, the mother-son duo have a close bond and are often seen posting pictures of each other.
Her youngest child, Dorian Gibbs, is a musician and writer who lives in Brazil and often visits his family in the US.
"My youngest son, has been living in Brazil for almost ten years!! He is in LA visiting, and I'm so glad we're hanging out having fun!!" said Marla Gibbs in a post.
The legendary comedian has several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom share a tight-knit family bond.
