Mark Hoppus, co-lead vocalist and bassist of Blink-182, has shared details of a life-altering experience he encountered in the late 90s, which set him upon the path to meet his eventual wife, Skye Everly- the MTV booker turned designer.

In a recount featured in his memoir Fahrenheit-182, Hoppus described what he termed as an ‘awful’ date with the Sabrina the Teenage Witch Melissa Joan Hart and how it set the foundation of his relationship with Skye Everly.

Mark Hoppus tells us that he didn’t have the best time on his date with Melissa. As he put it:

"Melissa and I went to a sushi restaurant in the Valley," he wrote in an excerpt from his memoir Fahrenheit-182 shared by Entertainment Weekly April 7. "It was an awful date. She was very nice, but we weren't connecting."

While this can only get worse for Hoppus, his short-lived relationship with Melissa opened a world of opportunities.

Mark received a voicemail shortly after returning to his place, and it was from Skye Everly, who worked as an executive at MTV, and the two ended up talking ‘the whole night.'

"I called her back and some light pleasantries quickly turned into deep conversation," the bassist recounted. "We talked for so long that the sun came up and we realized we'd talked all night."

When Skye Everly worked for MTV, that is where she first came across Hoppus because of a tip-off from Blink-182’s Tom DeLonge. Hoppus was really interested in her, but she turned him down initially. Eventually, they got along well and got married in December of 2000. Their son, Jack, was born in 2002.

She has seemingly been doing well in terms of managing her life outside of the rock world. Everly has launched several fashion, maternity, and children’s wear brands, such as Childish Clothing, and in 2007, she wrote a style guide for expecting moms named Rock Star Momma.

Her life professionally has been driven by creativity, while her personal endeavors, such as taking care of Hoppus through his 2021 stage 4 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma battle, are driven by resiliency. The singer has often credited Everly’s support as a cornerstone for his recovery.

Hoppus shared a vintage wedding picture and captioned, “22 years, 1 kid and a million memories, I love you Skye.” Friends and fans flooded the comments with congratulations and sentiments praising their undying love story.

Mark Hoppus’s tale of meeting Skye Everly is a striking reminder that the worst nights can lead to the best outcomes. A disastrous evening with Melissa Joan Hart took a turn when he met the woman who would go on to become not only his life partner but also his greatest source of strength.

With Blink-182 continuing its resurgence with tours and new releases, Mark Hoppus still remains grounded by his family life – an anchor he first discovered through a surprising phone call after a “tough” night.
