Australia's Next Model contestant Lucy Markovic has died at age 27.

Markovic, who starred in the 2015 season of the show and eventually went on to work for brands like Versace, succumbed to arteriovenous malformation (AVM), a rare brain condition. Her agent, Elite Model Management, confirmed her demise on her Instagram page.

Lucy Markovic was a Croatian-Australian top model and creator. She made her debut with Versace in 2022 and walked the runway for many a high-end brand like Versace, Givenchy, Fion Lee, and more. She had also been featured in prestigious publications like Schön! Magazine, Vogue Singapore, To Be Magazine, and Vogue Korea.

Speaking with Kult Australia, she said she wanted to be a model "since I was just a kid watching my older sister model and my mama, who would make incredible gowns." Apart from modeling, she told the outlet that some of her passions included "creating art, whether on a canvas, with clothing, jewelry, or makeup."

Everything we know about Lucy Markovic's illness as Donatella Versace pens a tribute:

A statement on Lucy Markovic's Instagram Stories read:

“I regret to inform you that Lucy has passed. She was at peace.”

Elite Model Management added:

“We are heartbroken to share that Lucy Markovic has passed away after a brave battle with a brain AVM. Lucy was a bright shining light, and had an incredible dry sense of humor. Her smile and laughter could light up a room, and draw you closer to her. She loved to dance, she really shined. Modeling was one of Lucy’s dreams, and we are deeply honored to have been part of that journey with her. She brought elegance, strength, and beauty to her work. But more than that, she brought herself—her warmth, her laughter, her light. To her family and friends, please know that you are in our prayers and in our hearts. We mourn with you, and we celebrate the incredible person Lucy was. We will never forget her."

According to the Mayo Clinic,

"an arteriovenous malformation, also known as an AVM, is a tangle of blood vessels that creates irregular connections between arteries and veins. This disrupts blood flow and prevents tissues from receiving oxygen. An AVM can occur anywhere in the body, including in the brain."

In the wake of her demise, droves have been expressing their sympathies, including Donatella Versace.

“I am so sorry to hear about Lucy. Rest in peace, beautiful girl,” she penned on Instagram.

Model Cartia Mallan said:

“Heartbroken to say the least. My beautiful friend Lucy sadly passed today after putting up a strong fight. I can’t even put into words how kind, radiant and caring she was as a human. Not to mention how insanely beautiful and talented she was.”

The model reflected on her battle with AVM as recently as last month, noting that it was “the size of a golf ball” and had caused her to suffer seizures.
