Kehlani, a Grammy-nominated singer known for her hit song 'After Hours', recently found herself in a public dispute with her ex and father of her child (Adeya), Javaughn Young-White.
Young-White, a comedian and photographer, recently filed court documents alleging concerns over Kehlani’s relationship with their daughter, Adeya. The accusations stem from a misunderstood remark Kehlani made, saying her daughter had been her 'wife in a past life,' a phrase she insists was misinterpreted.
Kehlani clarified that her comment came from a past-life reading, explaining it as a playful moment. However, Young-White cited this as evidence in his custody filing, raising questions about her parenting style. Kehlani responded emotionally, stating:
“To make me seem like I consider myself to be in an inappropriate relationship with my daughter…is the most heartbreaking thing I've ever heard.”
Kelhani expressed that Young-White’s portrayal had hurt her deeply, describing her bond with Adeya as a standard mother-child relationship. She also shared screenshots of her conversation with Young-White from where the accusations seemed to have stemmed, asserting:
"I shared what I considered to be a lighthearted recap with my child's father. Laughing at it and considering it something light and not to be taken serious."
What did Kehlani's former partner Young-White claim in the court documents?
Javaughn Young-White, Kehlani’s former partner and father of her child, has reportedly filed court documents claiming that the singer is involved in unconventional practices he deems unsafe for their daughter, Adeya.
Allegedly, Young-White has raised concerns about Kehlani’s supposed association with a group he refers to as a 'cult' and claims that members of this group care for Adeya while Kehlani is on tour. He also alleges that Kehlani made unusual comments about their daughter, referring to her spirit as a 'wife' from a previous life.
One accusation in the filing states that Adeya is sometimes in the care of adult group members under unusual circumstances while Kelhani is on tour. The document claims:
"Adeya sleeps in the bed with, and is given baths by random adult members of the cult and she is often in the bedroom alone with some of these people. I have been trying to express my fear, anger, and concern to Kehlani about our daughter's living environment when she is on tour and when she is with her cult, who essentially live in her home. However, instead of addressing my feelings, she resorts to disparaging me online to her millions of social media followers."
Who is Young-White? Kehlani's ex-partner
Javaughn Young-White is a guitarist who began working with Kehlani as part of her band, a connection she mentioned in a 2018 interview on Nikki Minaj's Queen Radio. Young-White is also the older brother of comedian and actor Jaboukie Young-White, widely recognized for his roles on The Daily Show and Only Murders in the Building.
According to People Magazine, Kehlani came out as queer in 2018, just before announcing her pregnancy. On Queen Radio, she shared that her co-parent, Javaughn Young-White, is also part of the LGBTQ+ community, which helped them understand each other’s identities, and that Young-White was supportive of her exploring her identity.
Kehlani initially kept her relationship with Javaughn Young-White private, but confirmed it shortly after announcing her pregnancy. Kehlani’s daughter Adeya was born in March 2019 through an unmedicated home birth, which Javaughn Young-White, then called 'the most beautiful moment of my life', but in his recent court documents mentions:
"Adeya was born through a home birth orchestrated by what I would describe as a cult that she belongs in,"
Kehlani and Young-White's custody battle
Though the pair co-parented after their split, Young-White filed for full custody in August 2024, raising concerns about Adeya’s environment and alleging Kehlani’s association with a group he refers to as a 'cult.' Kehlani firmly denied these allegations, calling it a 'legal, private, familial matter' and stressing her dedication to Adeya’s well-being.
This dispute between Kehlani and Young-White is part of an ongoing custody battle that remains unresolved.
