Ariana Grande attended the 97th edition with her mother, Joan Grande. In several photos and videos from the award ceremony, the Wicked star and Oscar nominee was captured with her mom, Joan.
The 67-year-old is a mother of two and a businesswoman. She is the President and CEO of Hose-McCann Communications, which the Grande family bought in 1964. In a 2013 interview, Ariana told Complex about her mother,
“My mom is a CEO and owns a company that manufactures communications equipment for the Marines and the Navy, so she’s not really the housewife type, if you get what I’m saying. She’s the most badass, independent woman you’ll ever meet—not the cookies-in-the-oven type.”
Joan Grande is also the founder of Diamond Dog Entertainment (DDE), a production company where she works with her son Frankie.
More about the Wicked star’s mother, Joan Grande
Beyond her business endeavors, Joan has been supportive of her children, Frankie and Ariana. The Brooklyn-born businesswoman recalled discovering her daughter’s talents during a past conversation with People Magazine. Joan said,
“She was probably 3, 3½. And she was in her car seat and I was driving and listening to NSYNC as every mother should be. She hit one of JC [Chasez]'s power high notes and I kind of pulled the car over and I said, 'Ariana, was that you?'
Joan Grande has accompanied her daughter at different events throughout the years. She was also present at the Manchester Arena when a bomber targeted Ariana’s concert. In 2018, the pop icon’s mother recalled her experience after the attack,
“I didn’t know where I was going. I just knew I was going to my daughter. Not to be overly dramatic—I struggle with this every day—but I didn’t know what I would find when I got to her. I sympathize with every parent who was waiting for a child. Those minutes when you don’t know what’s happening…there are no words.”
Joan’s other child, Frankie, is a dancer, actor, and producer born in 1983. The DDE founder has been married twice. Her first marriage was with Frankie’s father, Victor Marchione, between 1982 and 1987. Joan Grande tied the knot with Ariana’s dad, Edward Butera, in 1992, but they also parted ways in 2003.
The single mother raised her kids while also looking after her business. She even has acting credits for appearing in the music videos of Ariana Grande’s Positions and Stuck with U.
