Jarren Duran, an outfielder for the Boston Red Sox, recently opened up about his years-long mental health struggles and childhood pressures in the Netflix documentary The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox. He also shared that he attempted suicide during the 2022 Major League Baseball season.

According to NBC, in the documentary, Duran also talked about childhood pressure and how he felt he needed to live up to his father's expectations. The publication further reported that his father, Octavia Duran, always pushed him to be a better player and even recalled that his father would throw baseballs at him when he was younger to push him.

Jarren said,

"It was tough love. But I feel like everybody has gone through that. He was always hard on me, and I wanted to prove him wrong."

Though not much is known about Jarren's father, according to Sportskeeda, Octavia Duran was a manager at PepsiCo and is passionate about weightlifting.

Jarren Duran revealed that he tried to shoot himself during the 2022 season.

According to multiple reports, in the fourth episode of the Netflix documentary, Duran, who joined the Boston Red Sox in 2022, shared that he struggled as a rookie on the team. He shared how his telling himself he "sucked," the disappointments of fans, and more made him attempt suicide during the 2022 season,

"I got to a point where I was sitting in my room, I had my rifle and I had a bullet, and I pulled the trigger and the gun clicked, but nothing happened. So, to this day, I think God just didn’t let me take my own life, because I seriously don’t know why it didn’t go off."

He further shared that he took the failed attempt as a sign that he "might have to be here for a reason."

The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox is a Netflix documentary set to premiere on Tuesday, April 8. The documentary follows the Boston Red Sox players and team through the 2024 Major League Baseball season.

According to Sportskeeda, in 2023, when Jarren Duran was openly struggling with mental health issues due to his performance in the major league and as well as a season-ending toe injury, his father was a strong supportive force. In 2024, when he earned the "first All-Star nod" of his career, he immediately called his father, the baseball player, and even recalled with ESPN that they both broke down crying, CBS reported.
