Maurene Comey, the daughter of the former director of the FBI, James Comey, joined the s*x trial against Diddy on Monday, December 2. She is best known for serving as one of three lead prosecutors in the case against Epstein's accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell and Epstein were convicted of s*xually abusing and trafficking minors.
James Comey served as the director of the FBI for 4 years, from 2013 to 2017. His daughter, Maurene, 35, is also renowned for taking on the case of Natalie Edwards, a woman who supposedly blew the whistle on the Treasury Department, and Robert Hadden, a gynecologist accused of s*xually abusing several women. She was also one of the leading prosecutors in the trial against Jeffrey Epstein.
Diddy claims the government is in on a large scheme to get him convicted
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Maurene Comey has worked for the office of U.S. attorney of the Southern District of New York for almost a decade. She steps into the limelight following her fellow prosecutor's victory in getting Combs' motion for bail denied for the third time on Wednesday, November 27.
The presiding judge cited the disgraced mogul's “propensity for violence” and evidence pointing to “a serious risk of witness tampering.” Combs was indicted this September on several charges involving s*xual misconduct, and he currently awaits his day in court behind bars at the Metropolitan Detention Center. His trial has been set for May 5. If convicted, he is looking at life in prison.
Combs' defense team is being led by lawyer Marc Agnifilo. This October, they moved to have the jury ignore evidence allegedly leaked to the media, including a 2016 surveillance footage from a hotel where Diddy could be seen violently kicking, beating, and dragging his former partner, Cassie Ventura.
Per the Hollywood Reporter, Diddy blamed the Department of Homeland Security for allegedly leaking the video to CNN, noting that it was all part of a larger scheme to get the grand jury to indict him and tamper with his chance at a fair trial. However, on Monday, a federal judge ordered the prosecutors to submit an affidavit, asserting that they were not behind the leaks.
Under the federal rule of criminal procedure, the government is prohibited from revealing “anything that will reveal what transpired” during grand jury trials. U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian ordered the prosecutors to turn the same in by December 4.
As for Diddy's lawyer, Agnifilo has worked with prominent figures in the past, including Martin Shkreli, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, and Roger Ng. He also held stints under Harvey Weinstein's former lawyer, Ben Brafman.
