Ian Kersting's suicide comes after New Orleans experiences a terrorist attack
New Orleans's assistant district attorney Ian Kersting's suicide on January 4 comes after the city experienced a New Year's Day terrorist attack on the world-famous Bourbon Street.
On Wednesday at 3:15 am, right after New Year's Eve, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42 crashed his pickup vehicle from Canal Street into Bourbon Street killing 14 people. After investigation, police found weapons, and a possible improvised explosive vehicle along with an ISIS flag inside the vehicle.
Police confirmed that Jabbar died in a shootout with police. Jabbar was an army veteran who served in the U.S. Army on active duty from 2007 to 2015 and in the Army Reserves from 2015 to 2020. Jabbar was deployed in Afghanistan in 2009.
Jabbar's Facebook account included several videos that were recorded while he was driving his truck and were allegedly addressed to his family. In his videos, Jabbar "pledged allegiance to ISIS."
FBI took to their official website to make note of the terrorist incident while mentioning that as the lead investigative agency on the case, they are "working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism." FBI also mentioned that they are "aggressively running down all leads to identify any possible associates of the subject."
