Gordon Reynolds, a name included in Blake Lively’s end credit thank yous for the movie adaptation of It Ends With Us, has added even more to the ongoing drama surrounding the film.
Now, fans and critics are analyzing this mysterious reference, linking it to the heightened tension between Lively and her co-star Justin Baldoni.
In the end credits of It Ends With Us, Blake Lively includes a list of thank-yous, amongst which some appear bizarre. In addition to shout outs to family and other famous people, including Taylor Swift and Britney Spears, Lively credits Corn Hoover and Gordon.
The reference to Gordon Reynolds has received the most traction on social media. To those acquainted with Ryan Reynolds’s work, it’s a familiar Easter egg that has a long history as part of the actor’s sense of humor.
Gordon Reynolds is a fictional personality of Ryan Reynolds, originated in a self-interview with GQ magazine in 2016. Gordon plays Ryan’s imaginary twin brother in the skit, where he holds a mock interview that includes inappropriate questions and sarcastic jabs.
Later in 2024, Gordon Reynolds is credited as the actor who plays the character Nicepool in the Marvel blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine. Nicepool is a parody of Deadpool, a nice guy who masks misogynistic tendencies behind a facade of politeness, as per Distractify. The character Nicepool adds a satirical twist to the beloved Deadpool character, demonstrating Reynolds' comedic abilities.
The alleged connection between Gordon Reynolds’ Nicepool and Justin Baldoni
Baldoni, who stars in the film It Ends With Us, which includes Blake Lively as a co-star, was accused of sexual harassment by Lively, and their case has been waged in a public civil lawsuit for months now.
Baldoni’s attorneys have recently alleged that Nicepool’s characterization in Deadpool & Wolverine is a deliberate caricature of Baldoni.
In Deadpool & Wolverine, Nicepool, played by the fictionalized character Gordon Reynolds, makes a comment about Ladypool’s (played by Lively) body, commenting on the character's body after childbirth. A remark many took as paralleled allegations made against Baldoni, according to The Mary Sue.
Justin Baldoni’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, in a radio interview, addressed the Nicepool theory, saying:
"There’s no question it relates to Justin. I mean, anybody that [saw] that hair bun. If somebody is seriously sexually harassed, you don’t make fun of it. It’s a serious issue.”
However, there are several observers who point out that the timeline makes it very unlikely that Nicepool was deliberately modified to go after Baldoni since shooting for Deadpool & Wolverine started prior to Baldoni taking on the role in It Ends With Us.
