Ginalisa Monterroso has lately been in the news as the health care advocate for Wendy Williams, who has been under a legal guardianship since 2022.
A well-known health care advocate, Ginalisa Monterroso is the founder and CEO of Medicaid Advisory Group. Her organization helps people and families get Medicaid services, especially those who find the system too difficult to navigate on their own.
Monterroso’s work as an advocate was born out of her struggles with navigating Medical aid for her daughter, who was born with Down syndrome.
According to NJ Spotlight News, having a child with unique healthcare needs and navigating the challenge of getting proper care for him inspired Monterroso to start the Medicaid Advisory Group. Today, the organization helps the elderly, the disabled and those without insurance get the healthcare they are entitled to under Medicaid.
Wendy Williams’ financial troubles made headlines when her accounts were frozen amid accusations of possible financial exploitation. Reports had emerged that her son, Kevin Hunter Jr., had mishandled her money when serving as her power of attorney.
In a recent interview with People, however, Monterroso opened up about how Williams has since forgiven her son for his part in the financial dispute. Ginalisa Monterroso said the incident happened three years ago, and that Williams has had a happy relationship with her son ever since.
"So that's something that they were able to get through. That will always be her son, unconditional love. And that's pretty much, it was big news to everybody."
Williams and her son had also recently reunited in Florida, where she visited her father for his birthday, she added:
"He was there. And that's the last part. But I do know that she continued to communicate with him. And that's her honey bunny."
Ginalisa Monterroso addresses Wendy Williams' ongoing fight for freedom
Along with helping Williams with the money matter, Ginalisa Monterroso has been fighting for the actress in her ongoing guardianship battle. Williams has spoken up about wanting to manage her finances and personal decisions once more.
She has consistently denied allegations of cognitive decline, and has said she is completely capable of looking after her affairs. Ginalisa Monterroso backed Williams’ assertions, revealing that a recent mental competency test indicated she was alert and oriented. Monterroso said:
"This is something that she's been wanting to say, and she just can't wait to get her story out."
The advocate also escalated the case by calling 9-1-1 and contacting Adult Protective Services. That prompted a welfare check, which resulted in Williams being taken to hospital for evaluation. Monterroso said this was an effort to collect more evidence to support Williams’ claims of competency, and added:
"It was just more of a strategic move to just kind of get more evidence, because this case has been stuck."
Williams is to be independently examined for additional evaluations in front of a jury, which will ultimately rule on whether to dismiss her guardianship as the case moves forward.
