The Hollywood legend Gene Hackman, who enthralled us with his brilliant performances, was found dead alongside his wife, at their Sante Fe home on Wednesday. The discovery was made by two pest control agents working at the house. They noticed Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 65, lying on the floor through the window. One of them immediately called 911.

The cause of their deaths remains unknown, and an active investigation is currently underway. According to the reports, carbon monoxide tests were conducted, but the fire department has not detected any signs of poisoning or a possible gas leak.

Hackman was discovered lying face down, with his cane and sunglasses next to his body. Arakawa and their dog were found on the bathroom floor. A prescription bottle and a portable heater were also found on the floor.

"There was no indication of anything that was missing from the home or disturbed, you know, that would be indication that there was a crime that had occurred." Sheriff Mendoza said in a statement.

The iconic actor who captivated us with his performance in movies like The French Connection, I Never Sang to My Father, Unforgiven, and Mississippi Burning was born on 30 January 1930 to Anna Lyda Elizabeth and Eugene Ezra Hackman. His mother worked as a waitress, while his father ran a printing press for a local newspaper.

His parents divorced when he was thirteen, and he was primarily raised by his mother and maternal grandmother, Beatrice Gray. Hackman's father abandoned the family without even saying a proper goodbye, a moment that deeply impacted him. Looking back at the moment, the actor commented:

“It was a real adios. It was so precise. Maybe that’s why I became an actor. I doubt I would have become so sensitive to human behavior if that hadn’t happened to me as a child — if I hadn’t realized how much one small gesture can mean.”

Gene Hackman was especially close to his mother, who raised him on her own after her divorce. It was his mother who always encouraged him, telling him that one day she wished to see him on the big screen. In an interview with GQ back in 2011, the actor said:

"I would have been 10. Things parents say to children are oftentimes not heard, but in some cases you pick up on things that your parent would like to see you have done. Unfortunately my mom never saw me act, so I’m sorry for that, but that’s the way it is,” he told the magazine.

In the same interview, Gene Hackman shared he wished his mother had been able to see him perform on the big screen. His mother passed away in 1962, five years before his big breakthrough role in Bonnie and Clyde (1967). Before her passing, Hackman had only appeared in small roles in various TV shows. His mother died in an accidental fire caused by a lit cigarette. She had passed out while the cigarette was still burning, which led to the fire.

Despite this, there was one movie that Hackman especially wished his mother could have seen, and that was I Never Sang to My Father. The role later earned him his second Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

"I thought it was a sensitive picture about family and relationships, and I think she would have been proud and happy to see that. You’re fortunate to be able to do something in life that defines who you are, and who your parents may have wanted to be. he told GQ.

He further added:

"My lines, or any comfort, direction, or things of that nature, would’ve come from my mother. She and my grandmother were important.”

Gene Hackman is survived by his three children and grandchildren from his first marriage to Faye Maltese.
