Who is Dave Chappelle married to? All about the family as comedian accepts President's award at NAACP

Comedian Dave Chappelle has been married to Eliane Chappelle since 2001. The pair have mostly kept their relationship private. They met in Brooklyn when Dave was just starting out in comedy. Dave and his wife are parents to Sulayman, Ibrahim, and Sanaa.

Known for leading a low-profile life, Elaine Chappelle is hardly seen with her husband at public gatherings. Dave Chappelle has frequently talked about their decision to stay away from Hollywood.

The Chappelles who live on a 65-acre farm in Yellow Springs, Ohio, have chosen to live a private life away from Hollywood despite his stardom.

In 2020, on an episode of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman, Dave spoke about the private life that he and his family enjoyed as well as his parenting style as a father.

He said,

"We don't live in Hollywood, there's no paparazzi trying to get their picture. The community protects them in that sense."

They together parent a daughter, Sanna, and two sons, Sulayman and Ibrahim. Chapelle's kids have avoided the spotlight despite their father being a famous comedian. Dave has often spoken about how being a father changed his job by giving his life more meaning and motivating him to take his work obligations more seriously.

Dave frequently shares stories about his kids in his stand-up shows.

Dave Chappelle was the first comedian to win the coveted President's Award at the 56th NAACP Image Awards on February 22, 2024. In his speech, Chappelle talked about the value of representation and narrative in Hollywood.

He went on to say,

“I won a lot of awards recently, but this one tonight is probably the most special award I’ve ever gotten because it’s from this institution that represents these people, us people of color, Black people.”

for which he received a standing ovation from the audience.

He thanked his family for their support and mentioned how close he was to his "god brother," former NAACP president Ben Jealous. Chappelle said,

“From 100 years ago to this very night, they have been chipping away at this industry so that people like me can stand up in front of people and tell my story—or our stories.”

highlighting the history of the NAACP's struggle for equitable representation in the entertainment industry.
