The music community has sadly lost another of its beloved legends. Cocoa Tea, the celebrated reggae singer and songwriter, has tragically passed away at the age of 65. Malvia Scott, the deceased’s wife and life partner, confirmed through a conversation with the Jamaica Gleaner that the singer had died following a cardiac arrest. The incident took place on early Tuesday morning in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Several people touched by Cocoa’s music and reggae music as a whole took to social media to express their sadness and share their condolences for the singer’s passing. The list of affected mourners included Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who took to Instagram Tuesday to share some kind words about Cocoa and his legacy.

His heartfelt and powerful caption read,

“I extend condolences to the family, friends, and supporters of Calvin George Scott, affectionately known as Cocoa Tea. His smooth vocals and compelling lyrics gave us timeless classics like “Rocking Dolly” and “I Lost My Sonia,” songs that have become anthems in our cultural landscape. Beyond his musical genius, Cocoa Tea was a beacon of kindness and generosity, consistently uplifting the less fortunate and embodying the warmth of our nation.”

He also added a few sentences talking about the legacy left by the artist.

“Cocoa Tea’s influence extended beyond our shores, touching hearts worldwide and solidifying Jamaica’s place on the global musical stage. As we mourn his passing, let us celebrate the rich legacy he leaves behind, a legacy of melody, compassion, and cultural pride. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Who was Cocoa Tea?

The now internationally recognized Cocoa Tea was born in the Rocky Point neighborhood of Clarendon, Jamaica. He initially made a name for himself as a musician on the island before hits like I Lost My Sonia and Rocking Dolly garnered him worldwide recognition. His delivery was always laid-back and seemingly effortless, but his socially conscious messaging was always at the forefront of his music.

As Cocoa got older, his health unfortunately began to worsen, having first received the news of a lymphoma diagnosis in 2019. His wife, Malvia Scott, shared with the Jamaica Gleaner that a recent bout of pneumonia over the last six months worsened his condition until he reached a point of no return.

"He was definitely very brave"

Scott shared in conversation with a representative from the Gleaner.

"He was positive throughout it all. About three weeks ago when he was admitted in the hospital he asked if I was worried and I said 'I am always worried.' He told me not to worry because everything was going to be all right. He was always very hopeful."

This is truly saddening news in a string of recent stories that have left an indelible mark on the music community.
