Hollywood icon Bill Murray is best known for playing roles in Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, and Lost in Translation, but even with his storied acting career, he is a dedicated father. And among his children, Luke Murray has made a name for himself — not in entertainment, but in college basketball coaching.
Bill Murray is in the news during the 2025 NCAA March Madness tournament after he was seen courtside rooting for UConn, where Luke was on the coaching staff as an assistant. But just who is Luke Murray, and how has he defined his own self outside of being the son of the famed Coach Rick?

Luke Murray’s early life and education
Luke Murray was born in 1985 and is the second of Bill Murray’s six sons from his first marriage to Margaret Kelly. Even though many kids of celebrities follow in their parent's footsteps into the entertainment industry, Luke took the road less traveled, developing a love for basketball at a young age.
Born and raised in New Canaan, Connecticut, he has done his schooling at St. Luke’s School. Eventually, he achieved success after finishing his college degree from Fairfield University. In contrast to his father's comedies and dramas, Luke's arena of performance was mainly the basketball court and later the coaching sidelines.

Becoming a college Basketball coach
Luke Murray has been in the field of college basketball coaching for nearly 20 years and has worked with some of the biggest names in sports. He took on the position of director of basketball operations at Quinnipiac University in 2007-08. This is where his career started. Subsequently, he made his way upward through various programs acquiring unique skills.

Some of his coaching achievements are as follows:
- Post University (2008-09) – Assistant Coach
- University of Arizona (2009-10) – Graduate Assistant
- Wagner College (2010-11) – Assistant Coach with Dan Hurley
- Towson University (2011-13) – Assistant Coach
- University of Rhode Island (2013-15) – Assistant Coach with Dan Hurley
- Xavier University (2015-18) – Assistant Coach
- University of Louisville (2018-21) – Assistant Coach
- University of Connecticut (2021-present) – Assistant Coach with Dan Hurley
Luke solidified his position as a renowned and brilliant recruiter and strategist, especially being proficient in player development.

Bond of a loving father and son
Bill Murray greatly enjoys sports and has, for example, been witnessed at Cub games. Apart from all of this, nothing can outshine his role in Luke's coaching career, which has been a matter of fact.
The 73-year-old actor has been noticed a lot at the first UConn match in Tokyo, Japan, as well as during the high-stakes NCAA tournament matchups. In 2024, despite attending a Baseball game between two teams in Tokyo, Bill made sure to return on time to back up his UConn team on their March Madness journey.

His enthusiastic support in the stands—dressed in UConn gear and displaying emotions on the game—had gone viral on social media.
Luke has often told of how much the tradition of his father was something that he always cherished and how, for him, his father is not a star or a producer but rather just a "Father."

What’s next for Luke Murray?
Luke Murray's stellar track record of achieving multiple championships and the fact that he is gaining recognition as one of the best assistant coaches in college basketball indicate that he is a primary candidate for head coaching positions in the coming years. His knowledge in recruiting, strategic play, and team leadership is his advantage in candidacy for a top-tier program.
His focus for now is not to lose power. Still, he is busy helping UConn to keep staying dominant in basketball. And, of course, as always, his most devoted supporter - his father - is likely to be by his side at every game, egging him on.
