Barbara Broccoli, longtime producer of the successful, box office hit Bond franchise has decided to relinquish her creative control of the Bond franchise over to Amazon MGM studios. The producer, along with her half-brother and long-time collaborator, Michael G. Wilson has been a creative mastermind behind every Bond movie since their father's passing in 1991.

This latest development, which was announced on Thursday, follows Amazon's 2022 acquisition of MGM, which included rights to distribute the Bond movies.

"Since his theatrical introduction over 60 years ago, James Bond has been one of the most iconic characters in filmed entertainment. We are grateful to the late Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman for bringing James Bond to movie theatres around the world, and to Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for their unyielding dedication. We are honored to continue this treasured heritage and look forward to ushering in the next phase of the legendary 007 for audiences around the world." said Mike Hopkins, the Head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios.
"My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli. I have had the honor of working closely with four of the tremendously talented actors who have played 007 and thousands of wonderful artists within the industry. With the conclusion of No Time to Die and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects." said the visionary producer as she reflected on her journey.

Wilson G. Wilson who has been associated with the Bond franchise since 1977 said:

"With my 007 career spanning nearly 60 incredible years, I am stepping back from producing the James Bond films to focus on art and charitable projects. Therefore, Barbara and I agree, it is time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to lead James Bond into the future."

Barbara Dana Broccoli was born on June 18, 1960, to legendary Hollywood producer, Albert R. "Cubby" Broccoli and actress, Dana Wilson Broccoli. The iconic Bond franchise was launched by Albert R. Broccoli, along with his co-producer Harry Saltzman.

Barbara's journey with the Bond franchise began in the publicity department for the 1977 movie The Spy Who Loved Me. She later took on the role of executive assistant for the 1983 Bond movie, Octopussy. Over the years, Broccoli has played a pivotal role in shaping the franchise, overseeing key decisions that have helped transform it into the global phenomenon it is now.

After stepping into the role of producer, alongside her brother for the 1995 Bond movie Golden Eye, Barbara made the bold decision to cast Judi Dench as M, the head of the organization. Ever since, the brother-sister duo has been at the helm of every Bond movie, culminating with their final 2021 production, No Time to Die.

“I think one of the successes of Bond is that it hasn’t been afraid to change with the times. Sometimes it got a little stuck in the time, but the books were written in the ’50s, the films started in ’60s. I mean, the world has changed dramatically since then. We’ve just had to constantly reinvent him, and we’ve had the opportunity with each new actor to recalibrate the series.” said Broccoli on her vision behind the Bond movies.

The trailblazing producer, whose net worth is estimated to be around $400 million, married Frederick Zollo in 1991. The couple later divorced, and share one daughter, Angelica Zollo. Broccoli has also dated celebrated chef, James Martin. Broccoli divides her time between London and LA and has mentioned how this led her to have a mid-Atlantic accent.

In response to the recent decision to hand over creative rights to Amazon MGM studios, Daniel Craig said in a statement to Variety :

"My respect, admiration and love for Barbara and Michael remain constant and undiminished," Craig, who played the suave spy in five successful films. I wish Michael a long, relaxing (and well deserved) retirement and whatever ventures Barbara goes on to do, I know they will be spectacular and I hope I can be part of them."

Broccoli and her brother were appointed Officers of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), in 2022, for their contributions to film and drama. Throughout their decade-long career, they have received numerous accolades, like the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Film for Skyfall, and the prestigious David O. Selznick Achievement Award.

Now it remains to be seen what this latest acquisition shall mean for the 007 agent.
